“The highlight our holiday - do it!!”
Review of Safari BOB Diving

Safari BOB Diving
Reviewed 2 June 2018

We had a great time in Tenerife doing all the things visitors do, but our afternoon Safari BOB Diving was the highlight of the week, and the thing we'll remember best. I have to admit I was a bit nervous about the whole thing, but Danny and Gonzalo were great at putting us at ease and making us feel safe and comfortable.

For anyone else who is nervous and wondering whether to give it ago (you really should!), here's how it all went...

We met the boat at the dock at Puerto Colon as instructed in Danny's confirmation email. There's lots of parking available along the harbour wall and also in the nearby car park. The dock piers are 2 minutes walk from the beach so we got there early and the kids played in the sea for a while before we wandered over to Pier 4.

Danny and Gonzalo welcomed us on board and gave us wetsuits to wear. I'd suggest you go in swimming gear so you can just pull the wetsuit on over the top - there's no changing area - you just get into the suit on on the boat. I'm a big lad (6ft2, 18st+) and both the wetsuit and the BoB itself fitted me fine. Once we'd kitted up we headed out along the coast for about 15 minutes to a sheltered cove where Danny and Gonzalo lowered the BOBs into the sea off the back of the boat.

We were a family of 5 (Mum, Dad and 3 boys aged 15, 13 and 11) and we were the only people on the trip, so we split into two groups and the first 3 of us had to climb/jump off the boat into the sea where the guys were waiting with the BOBs. There's a simple manoeuvre required where you have to duck under the water and pull yourself up into the dome of the BOB. It sounds a bit daunting, but it was really easy and the guys were there to help. Once you're in the BOB you sit on a little scooter seat and breath air normally. One thing to mention - because we'd jumped off the boat, swum a few yards to the back of the boat, then pulled ourselves into the BoB, a couple of us found we were breathing quite heavily when we first entered the BOB - it's easy to panic at this stage and think you can't breathe properly, but trust me - if you calm yourself and breathe normally for a few seconds, you realise you can breathe exactly as you would on land.

Once we were all in our BOBs we headed off for a trip round the cove to see what we could find. One thing to mention here is that you don't drive/steer the BOB yourself - Danny and Gonzalo do all that (they're in Scuba gear and with you all the time) so all you have to do it enjoy the view. We were immediately joined by a big crowd of fish who followed us throughout the dive. Danny and Gonzalo took it in turns exploring the seabed and if they found anything interesting, they either brought it to us, or steered the BOBs towards it. We saw an octopus and an arrow crab on our trip, plus hundreds of fish. Danny produced some fish treats and immediately there were fish everywhere (I suspect that's why they were following us!).

Once our dive was over we slowly made our way back up to the boat and the surface, then once we got the signal, we had to reverse the ducking manoeuvre to slip out of the BOB and up to the surface (we were only about 12 inches under the water by this point). Then the other half of our group had their turn and we sat and relaxed on the boat watching the nudists on the rocks above the cove (ahem!).

I'd thoroughly recommend Safari BOB Diving to anyone wanting a memorable experience. The guys are lovely and friendly, but also reassuringly competent and professional - they know what they're doing and you're in safe hands.

We paid for the photos of our trip, which Danny emailed to me less than 24 hours afterwards - there were 170 top quality photos and a couple of short videos. Well worth the money.

If you're thinking of doing this trip, DO IT!!

We had an amazing time moving around fish and have great photos to remember this time. 100% recommended if you go to Tenerife. Danny and Gonzalo are great with people, really knowledgeable and good fun so you'll have a great time doing BOB diving.
