“1 week break early February 2012”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 March 2012

This was our second Riu holiday, this one was half board. as expected everything was great, food, cleanliness, staff etc. It was mainly couples, but generally a lot older than us(52 & 57) but maybe we don't realise how old we look!! I think I could count on one hand the number of couples that appeared younger than us.

The evening entertainment which we looked in on once, was singing and polite clapping, not our cup of tea, but then we are not bothered about that really happy with entertaining ourselves. There were quite a number of same sex couples which did not bother us, as with any holiday it's behaviour that counts and we had no problems here. Children were almost non existant, pool entertainment was non existent, so if you like peace and quiet you'll love it here, also there was no mad early morning rush for sunbeds.
points worth being aware of:
You are allocated a table number and sitting for dinner at either 6pm or 8pm for the duration of your stay, we were allocated 8pm, which is far too late for me to eat every night, so we asked to be changed which they did from the Monday. You can do the buffet graze or have table service for the main course, He grazed and I was waited on which was great as the meal was always served on a hot plate and the food was nice and hot too. You can also book to go in the Krystal Restaurant which is well worth it at no extra cost, we did this twice during our stay.
15 euros for safe.

Sitting by the pool for seven days is a bit much for us, we can only chill for so long, so we did hire a car for a couple of days, we did ask the rep for details but the one recommended was very pricy at 45 euros per day plus insurance, we walked up the main road from the hotel and found that generally it was 30-35 euros, but one company had a special offer of 65% off and we got a fiat panda with air con for 40 euros for 2 days including insurance with a 50 euro refundable deposit, they were called Suarmez but do check T&C's as we found the insurance is void if you don't fill out an accident report, there was not one in the car and I struggled to get a blank form out of the old gentleman who did not speak good English. The fuel bill was 27 euros, we had to return the car with the same amount of fuel which was half a tank.
We did a tour of the island and up into the mountains which was stunning, do take long trousers/jacket/shoes as it was pretty chilly up on the peak. Mist freezing onto the pine needles was very unexpected. Driving was OK up in the mountains you need a head for heights in parts and some caution on the winding roads, I’d rather do it in a car than a coach.

When booking we did look at the Riu wikiki cheaper and all inclusive, but were glad we didn't as location was did not look good when we passed it on the dual carriageway.

We have a Rui membership card which you can apply for on line and earn points it's all on the website and worth looking at.

We've stayed at the Riu on three occasions now and each time has been great. The staff are very attentive and always on hand to help. The food is amazing and always fresh, whether at breakfast or evening dinner. The accommodation varies, but try and get a sea view if you can. The cleanliness is always good.

We visited the Riu Maspalomas in July 2011 as a 'minimoon'; we wanted to go somewhere where we could spend some time together and laze by the beach but, most importantly, that was gay friendly. The Riu is set on the sand dunes and, if you opt for a sea view, the view is just fantastic. It is within walking distance of the beaches, bars, clubs and whatever else you might need. Our room was very nice; probably not the nicest I've stayed in, in terms of design, but we were comfortable. It was spacious and impeccably clean with space to sit both inside and out on the balcony. On arrival we were greeted very warmly, congratulated on our civil partnership and they'd left a bottle of cava and a flower arrangement with a congratulatory card in the room which was a nice touch. They also arranged a cold supper for us and other late arrivals, which was just salad and cold seafood and meat but much appreciated.

We thoroughly enjoyed the food; there was a wide buffet selection as well as an a la carte menu - all included. Everything seemed fresh and well thought out. It was a shame that alcoholic drinks are not included but if you do order a bottle of wine, they will keep the rest for you for the next night (you are assigned a table to eat at for the duration of your stay). My only complaints would be that they did not really police their policy of formal dress for the dining room. While I was fine in dresses and shoes my wife - who tends to wear jeans or shorts - invested in a few pairs of chinos and trousers to avoid being turned down in the restaurant...only to find many people wandering in wearing shorts, flip flops and other things that were on the 'prohibited list'. Their attire didn't really bother us, more the fact that we (and another guest we spoke to) had gone out of our way to accommodate a rule they don't even seem to make guests adhere too. Many of the German guests were incredibly pushy during the buffet and downright rude at some point, though this of course is not the hotels fault but did affect our experience.

We tried the a la carte restaurant, Crystals, and weren't particularly impressed with either the service, the menu, or the food itself. We didn't return; though you can return as many times as you like free of charge as long as you book.

The breakfast was absolutely fantastic. We tried the cava they provided once but it was awful stuff (still, a nice touch, I suppose!) The fresh juices were fantastic and every day there was a different selection of cakes and pastries. The coffee was good and the waiters were attentive. No problems getting a good table outside on any of the days. Overall we were very pleased.

The pool area was very nice. Towels are provided, so don't bother packing your own. We never had any problems getting a sunbed. We had read reviews saying that some guests reserve them all very early; this was true, yet there were always still plenty available.

There was a poolside cafe which served lunch, drinks and snacks. We ate there a couple of times and both times the seafood I ordered was very fresh and well cooked.

Nick, the Thomson rep, was absolutely fantastic. So friendly, accommodating and really good fun on a night out.

Unfortunately Playa del Ingles leaves much to be desired itself - much of it is tacky and run down - but we wanted somewhere where we could walk down the street holding hands with no problem and get a bit of sun for a reasonable price. The hotel absolutely made the trip for us. What a lovely setting to relax, swim and spend time together. If we were to return to the area this would definitely be the hotel we would book.

Room Tip: We thought our sea view was well worth it.

Very Good Hotel ,but a bit far from the beach . Great food and pool area. Very Friendly Staff, Big minus=no internet in rooms!(only in lobby area).
Customers mostly over 50 or 60 so not really recomended to young ppl looking for fun or company.

This must be about the sixth time we have stayed at this hotel, so obviously we must like it quite a lot.
It is one of those rare hotels that is very difficult to find fault with.
Service is generally very good and better than some five star hotels I could and have mentioned before.
Many staff remember you from before. We bumped into the hotel manager in the bar who remembered our names and said 'welcome home'.
In fact I believe that over 50% of the guests at any one time have stayed here before.

Most people read these reports for the ‘dirt’ but they are also very useful to find out things not mentioned in the brochures. So here goes.
All rooms have a bathtub with powerful shower above on a flexible hose – not one of those horrible fixed showerhead units. I believe that some single rooms have a smaller bathtub.
All rooms have a safe with space for a laptop. There is a charge made for the use of the safes.
Rooms do not have tea & coffee making facilities – so take a travel kettle if you want a cup of tea in bed the morning.
All rooms have air con, a fan and a security device on the patio windows so that you can partially open them for ventillation.
Ground floor rooms facing the garden have a large balcony/terrace and are fairly private.
Room 3073 has a good sea & dunes view (extra cost).
Extensive buffet dinner with many veggie choices and option of fine dining in the Krystal restaurant at no extra cost.
Breakfast buffet has a good choice and food is constantly replenished.

Location: despite its name the hotel is in Playa de Ingles not Maspalomas.
On our first visit to Gran Canaria we stayed elsewhere thinking this hotel was near the lighthouse and not where we wanted to stay. Silly us.
The hotel has limited parking but there is lots of free on street parking nearby.
There is a taxi rank and bus stop right outside too.

Thankfully there is no karaoke.
Children’s facilities are limited and you do not get the type of guests who wear football shirts.

The hotel has a sophisticated adult environment where you can relax by the pool with peace, quiet and maybe a lobster lunch during the day and enjoy dressing smarter for dinner.
I can`t wait to go again.
As the hotel is so popular if you find a bargain price ie Free sea view etc - BOOK IT !

Room Tip: All are good but enquire about the view.
