“Great location, basic but adequate accomodation”
Reviewed 4 February 2011

Fantastic location! Ski in and out with ski lockers at ground level.
We had an apartment that sleeps up to 4 people. For the two of us this was fine, but for 4 I would imagine it is very cramped. Double room with double bed that only just fits. Bathroom quite small, but functional. Kitchen / dining / living area good size. The kitchen has microwave, electric hob, fridge, dishwasher and coffee percolator. The living area has 2 sofas which are single sofa beds. Lacked storage space for cases etc. Balcony with excellent views over the whole resort from every apartment.
Apartments are cleaned by the previous occupants and inspected on departure. Ours was very clean.
Lifts and walkways through adjoining hotels to get down to the main street, and these are very handy for getting back up to the hotel as it is a steep walk back! On the main street there are many restaurants, bars, ski hire shops and 2 supermarkets.
Generally Avoriaz was a great location for skiing with lots of choice for intermediate skiers like us!!

Tips:
Take towels 8 euros for a bath towel and hand towel
Take dishwasher tablets & sponge. 8 euros for a 'cleaning kit'

We had the apartment for 2-4 people. 1 Bedroom with sofabeds in the lounge.

The apartments are reasonable value for ski apartments, but on our visit the beds were so uncomfortable my husband hardly slept the whole time we were there. Mine was a permanent banana shape, curved across not along the mattress where people had sat on them as the sofa, and threatened to eject me from my bed at all times. The children had the double room - if you were lucky the door opened past the bed, just, with a push, and the was just about room for a small cube table by the side of the bed, and the other was straight up to the wall. Caravans have more space. And storage throughout was the same....

The kitchen area was reasonable being as we weren't planning much more than brekkie and the odd meal of pasta or similar. The bathroom was the most spacious room pro rata, and had a resonable sized bath, large sink and loo. Design throughout was like a 70's theme, brown and orange. Funkier than it sounds in reality!

The cleanliness seemed to be largely the responsibility of the previous occupant. Hence varied I would imagine. They do visit the apartments with a 'Henry' in tow - just as well as the vaccuum in the flat was useless - but it wasn't great. Previous guests food was still on the shelves, so it obviously wasn't checked very well.

We paid for an internet modem, which went down halfway through our stay. Reception were not helpful or sympathetic in any way, and it took many many visits to get someone out to look at it, with various excuses (none matching) offered. This was of primary importance to me as we run our own business and need to be in touch with people. Eventually we had a refund and used the WiFi at Tourist Information.

Reception in general was generally unfriendly, apart from one younger man who was helpful and pleasant.

Tips:
Ask for a kettle (free from reception - not in the rooms)
Take your own towels - £60 for the week was a lot for a bit more in the car. Thankfully we thought ahead.
Be prepared to clean and take all your linen down to the reception level at the end, or you risk losing your 200 euro deposit.

Plus points? Reasonable value considering even the size, but more storage is desperately needed. Heating was great and efficient. Location great, ski-in, ski-out for the proficient on roads, and straight down two public elevators if not which spit you out by the best pub in Avoriaz and the brilliant childrens ski school run by Annie Famose. Lifts a short schuss away.

But would I go back? No I don't think so. There are better private apartments in Avoriaz than Antares has to offer, in terms of space and facilities.

We had a party of 16 staying in 4 apartments. The view from the balcony is fantastic but there is not much more you can say! On arrival at the top station the only way you can get to the apartments apart from walking for 20 minutes carrying your luggage through snow and uphill is to catch a 'rat-track'. Our luggage was packed in a trailer and we climbed into 2 of the snowmobiles after agreeing a price for our group as there were 4 young French lads who were also travelling. When we got to the hotel the 4 lads had got their luggage and run inside without paying leaving our group to try and explain to the 2 drivers (who don't speak any English and were holding our luggage for ransom) that we were not paying any more than agreed. The matter got very heated and the 2 drivers got abusive despite the fact that we were a family party of all ages including children. After arguing for 20 minutes they started throwing our luggage off the trailer and we eventually got inside the hotel. The staff behind reception were pleasant and helpful but reception is only open for arrivals and departures so don't expect them to be there very often. We were given a bag with our bedding (another drawback in France, you have to make up your own beds) and arrived at the apartments. To say they are compact is an understatement. The double bedroom has a double bed pushed against the wall and a bedside table, there is no room for anything else in the room. The bathroom is tiny with a shower over a small size bath, wash basin and toilet but no room to move. Lounge/dining/kitchen area is adequate but again compact although the kitchen has all the utensils you should need. As the apartments are in one of the highest buildings in Avoriaz there are great views from the balconies but the downside is having to carry any shopping up 2 lifts and along 2 very long corridors. After our problems on arrival our rep agreed to meet us and accompany us back to the coach on departure. Again our luggage was put in a separate trailer and yet again the drivers wouldn't let us have our luggage as they were trying to get more money. Luckily the rep was able to get them to open the trailer doors but they walked away and left us to get our bags off ourselves. Avoriaz is a pretty town with great pistes for all grades of skiiers but unfortunately this doesn't make up for the rudeness of many of the French who, we felt were trying to rip us off the whole time. Back to Italy next year!

The apartment was clean and spacious. We stayed in a "3 piece" apartment for 6/7 people. This consisted of a spacious lounge/diner with 2 sofa beds and a 3rd that pulled out with legs to make a proper bed. A TV (19E for week) and a balcony. Plenty of room in the bedroom to add this bed for our little one and still be able to move around.
The kitchen was well placed and clean and functional. The cupboards were filled with all you could need to cook basic food and we were pleased to find more than enough cutlery and plates so you could put a couple of sittings in the dishwasher before you needed to wash up a few.
There were nice big saucepans etc to cook with too.
The lounge had a door to the hall which meant when you put the kids to bed you were completely separate which was nice.
In the hallway was a large shelfing unit and a hanging cupboard and next to it a toilet.
Along the corridor was a bathroom (with shower in bath) next to a shower room (nice powerful shower)
Next to these was the purpose made alcove for the bunk beds. These had deep drawer storage underneath and individual lights (nice touch)
At the end of the corridor was the double bedroom. This again had a big storage cupboard and two bedside tables.
We were told by reception that our apartment was a little larger because it was on the end (it made the longe/diner a bit wider at one end).
Overall we were extremely impressed.
Oh and don't worry about how you get your stuff up there either. We ended up with 18 bags (including food and skis etc!!). They are extremely organised with this too. When you arrive you back your car into a bay and empty it and most of your family onto a concourse. When everyone is ready and the car has been parked an attendant calls a snowmobile that takes you and the bags to the door of the hotel. The cost for this was a fixed rate of 8E which we thought was quite reasonable.
To get down to the village on foot is easy by going down one lift crossing one hotel and going down a second lift. It brings you out pratically at the door of the Sherpa supermarket opposite the Anne Famose childrens ski school.
To sum it up this Apartment is spacious, very well equipped, with tons of storage and to top it all the most fantastic views over the whole of Avoriaz and the valley and mountains beyond.
