“Bermuda is beautiful”
Reviewed 7 September 2012

My husband, daughter, I stayed at the Grotto Bay in August. The location is very nice and most of the staff are fantastic, Juneann and Esme, especially.

The beach is great. The water is calm and beautiful and the ship wreck out front makes for a nice snorkle. The fact that they charge for the waterslide is laughable and just plain wrong!

I had read the other reviews about the bedlinens so I was not surprised by them. They are in need of replacement and an update.

There is a lot of walking around the resort. We found it pleasant, however we noticed some of the elderly folks having a bit of trouble. They do have a shuttle which will pick you up and take you where you need to go.

The public transportaion is great. Easy to use, and right out in front of the hotel. The bus driver will let you know where you need to get off if you tell them your destination. The locals are very friendly, as well and they will help if needed.

Do go to the Swizzle Inn for a meal or a drink. The food is very good and less expensive than the hotel. If you plan on eating in the hotel, make sure to get dinner reservations. We ran into a bit of difficulty one evening (our fault, not the hotel) when we did not have a reservation for dinner. We found the food to be ok, not great at the hotel. The service was always good.

Grotto Bay is conveniently close to the airport with beach and pool on the property as well as caves! One of the caves you can actually swim in (the other is reserved for spa guests). The grounds were very nicely maintained. The beach is small, but fine with good snorkeling. There are bus stops right in front of the property and you can walk to Swizzle Inn, an ice cream shop, Crystal Caves and Blue Hole Park. We didn't eat at the property except for grab and go breakfast. The one pool side drink we had was just okay. The room was fine-clean, typical. Overall, if I could get a good deal, I would stay there again.

Outstanding family resort, excellent location, good overall service, amazing waiters (Cristian and Liviu) and the best concierge I’ve ever met: E Michael Jones. Caveat: make sure you’re getting an “all-inclusive” package!

We stayed at this resort for a week last year and enjoyed it so much that we returned this year for another week. A perfect family holiday with time to laze on the beach or by the pool, swim in the sea, in the cave(!) or in the pool and indulge in various watersports too.
Grotto bay is only a few minutes from the airport so a taxi costs around $7 plus tip. The bay faces northish (I think) so is sheltered from the breeze for most of the time. You can actually see the airport from the hotel and you can hear the occasional aircraft arriving and departing but there are not many flights each day and the noise is not intrusive or bothersome.

The hotel is well laid out, clean, spacious and was a very pleasant place to stay for a week. The rooms are clean and well presented with all the usual bits and pieces that you would associate from a 4 star hotel. The staff are friendly and helpful and the food is good with plenty of choice. Service in the restaurant is very polite a courteous although can sometimes be a little bit slow for a guy like me who's always in a rush!

We chose the 'all inclusive' package which I think offered a very good deal. It included all non motorised watersports, tips, most drinks except wine and champagne(They publish a list of what is included) and also passes allowing unlimited travel on the islands buses and ferries. (You cannot hire a car in Bermuda).

Of course it would not be fair to include only the positive points, but I can only think of a couple of areas that potential customers (and hotel management) should be aware of. Firstly if you arrive at the beach or pool area after mid morning you might struggle to find a free parasol if you want shade (although there are some palms that provide natural shade too). Secondly, there was only ever one member of staff at the pool bar. Service can therefore be quite slow at times, especially during the lunch period when the waiters also use the same staff to obtain drinks for the diners. If there are a number of customers waiting to be served around the four sided bar, the staff sometimes served people out of turn which can be irritating after a long wait. Overall these points did not spoil my stay at the Grotto Bay, it is a lovely resort and I look forward to returning again soon.

Room Tip: Get a room with a sea view.

The grotto bay is nice hotel with beautiful views of the ocean from almost everywhere on the property. All the rooms overlook the ocean as well. The rooms are simple, clean and comfortable. The pool is clean and the water was perfect. The private beach, which was never crowded, has soft white sand and calm, clear water. It's perfect for kids, relaxing, or water sports. The resort is only 5 minutes from the airport but there are so few flights in and out of Bermuda that the noise is not an issue. The food was good but not great. There's a gentleman on staff named E Michael who walks around and makes sure guests are enjoying themselves. He is very pleasant and understands customer service. The rest of the staff could learn something from him for sure. Overall I would recommend this hotel but recommend you stay somewhere else if you're expecting ritz Carlton-level service.

Room Tip: All rooms have ocean views but ask to be close to pool
