Having traveled in much of Latin America, I was pleased to discover The El Salvador right here in Lubbock, under my own nose, so to speak. The food is extremely authentic and the papusas (think quesadillas, but 100x better and made with thick corn tortillas, not wheat) are out of this world. This is truly a trip to Latin America without the long flight.
Although it is located outside of town, in a rather odd spot, this is the only place in Lubbock that I know of to get your pupusa fix. The food is excellent and the owner is very friendly and outgoing. Prices are very reasonable as well.
My husband and I had been hearing about this restaurant for some time, but it is out of the way and so we hadn't tried it. Last weekend, we decided to give it a try. The waiter and the owner were both very friendly. The place has been recently remodeled and is very clean and attractive. They have a nice bar available. The waiter explained what the items were on the menu, since we aren't familiar with this type of food. We ordered a sampler appetizer plate and then some Pupusas. Both my husband and I were very pleased with our dishes and look forward to returning. It is NOT Tex-Mex, so don't expect it. It is very mild in flavor. The pupusas were two small tortillas with various meat or vegetarian fillings. Give it a try sometime!
Excellent food, the place is clean and the prices are very low.
