“Docents are strange”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 April 2012

There are a lot of interesting things to see here but the place is never lit! When we were there, the policy was to go on a guided tour only with a docent who talked and held a flashlight for a few minutes on the items she was discussing. Kind of frustrating. I'd like to be able to see everything in the room; I don't always think the same things are interesting as the docents do.

“Gorgeous and great care.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 March 2012

This is a holy shrine to those who care for and maintain the place. They consider it their version of the Vatican it is cared for with such reverence. It's a mansion belonging to a historic Texas personality whose father was a one time during the 1800's or early 1900's. Ima Hogg. Truly, Ima Hogg. Their arte watchful guards peppered all around the place, in the mansion and on the grounds. For a glimpse of true Texas elegance this venue in Houston, Texas is certainly worth your time. There are often special events occurring there such as special concerts.

Get a lot of history while looking at some of the best antiques as in a museum. Great family programs.

“Well worth visiting!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 March 2012

Here's a note from their website:
"Bayou Bend is a collection of American fine and decorative arts in the former home of noted philanthropist and Houstonian Ima Hogg located in River Oaks. The home is surrounded by large formal, organically maintained gardens."

It's absolutely lovely, and the manner in which the home is decorated (with different rooms done in different time periods from colonial through the late 1800s) is very interesting. I was fortunate enough to visit with someone who knew Miss Hogg, and learned that she was a major force in creating the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. Without her efforts, I believe that Houston would likely be another Gulf Coast city.

The gardens are extensive and pretty, and great for little ones to run around and enjoy. If you should have the opportunity to enjoy a docent-led tour, it's very informative.
