“Houston insiders know...”
Reviewed 1 November 2011

This is a great place when you want tapas. They also have a bar which has a solid locals following...but we go for the food and wine! Lots of original small dishes here. The owner is half Portuguese, half Italian- which makes for some really delicious and novel food combinations. Don't think we have ever had a dish we didn't like here and we have been there probably a dozen times and try something new each time!
They have happy hour drink and food specials, daily special dishes, and weekday specials on certain dishes...we love this place!
It is not a big place...small and intimate and as non-chain-like as a place can get...another plus for us.
Periodically they run their paella Sunday-we still gotta get there to try it!!

“Fantastic Tapas and wine”
Reviewed 11 October 2011

Our very first visit was a winner. The menu is superb, not a single dish was anything less than excellent and we had about 7 between the four of us. Great wine list as well and the price for everything was about $30 each with tip. You cannot go wrong.

“Great tapas do not miss this place if you go to Houston”
Reviewed 20 June 2010

We found this hidden gem 2 years ago on a trip to Houston. The food was hot and came out quick. We had the arancini, rocket salad, grilled mushrooms, empanda, goat cheese rolled in nuts, salmon on crostini. I was so happy to see that this establishment was still open and thriving. It was as great as It was 2 years ago. We went on a Tuesday before 6PM. Glad we went early this place filled up fast. I had check TA too see the reviews. To the negative one this place is a BAR enviroment that serves great food. We could have lingered a little longer after dinner but we wanted the others waiting for a table to have the same great experience that we had. We left happy and full.

“Best wine and tapas in Houston”
Reviewed 8 October 2009

We loved it! flew in to Houston and was not sure what to expect. But we were blown away by the quaint, non pretensious wine bar. Food was superb, not too expensive.
Wines were unusual and well priced. I could have sworn i was in NY or San Fran...
Wish i could say the same for other places we went to in Houston...

“unforgivably rude service will ruin your appetite”
Reviewed 25 June 2009

We have frequented Oporto Café several times since discovering it a few months ago. 3 of the 4 times we went, different waiters pushed certain items on us (wine, expensive plates, etc.), but this we just brushed off. However, after our last experience, we will not be returning.

I do not know the waiter’s name, since he never introduced himself. His most rude and unforgivable mistake was pushing my colleague, a recovered alcoholic, to drink. When we ordered a pitcher of sangria (we were a party of four), he brought four full glasses of sangria to the table (an understandable assumption), followed by the pitcher. My friend then told the waiter he did not want a glass of sangria, and the waiter, instead of apologizing, chastised him for not wanting to drink (reminded me of a frat brother harrassing a pledge). When my friend asked for water, the waiter said, “No, I’m only going to bring you wine.” Thinking he was being sarcastic, we were surprised when no water ever arrived and we had to ask for water again once the food was served.

This was the worst of many offenses over the course of our meal. Suffice it to say that our time ended when the waiter interrupted our conversation and told us that it was 9:55 and he had a 10pm reservation for 6 people that required our table (ironically, they don't take reservations). Having had to wait a half hour to be seated when we arrived, we were appalled and left. We will never be back and would warn others not to go there. I wrote them about this experience through their website and never heard back.

The food is good, but not worth what they charge and not worth this harrassment. The sangria varies from very good to somewhat watery - better than most places in Houston, though. The place is noisy, so hard to have an intimate dinner or even hang out with friends (unless you don't want to talk to your friends).
