Probably the only time most people will get to be on a real oil rig. We learned a lot. Short, self-guided tour. Long walk up the ramp to get there but elevator inside.

I worked as a research scientists for 44 years, so I found this museum fascinating. I am always amazed by the feats of modern engineering, and I have always wonder how off-shore rigs maintain their position over the drill stem and how they are anchored to the sea floor. The displays answered all my questions. We recommend that you take the audio tour, and allow 2-3 hours to see everything. We learned about jack-up rigs (see photo), spar rigs and anchoring systems (including long chains with huge 500 lb links). In addition to the engineering, we learned about all the personnel who run the rig and keep it supplied. It was fun to tour an actual jack-up rig, and the third level provides a great view of big cargo ships coming to the port of Galveston. You can tell that Big Oil pays for this museum because none of the adverse effects of ocean drilling are ever mentioned. However, this omission does not keep me from appreciating the technical prowess of engineers who design the rigs. The parking lot for the Ocean Star is not big, but plenty of paid parking is available nearby. The Ocean Star is a short walk from the Texas Seaport Museum and tall ship Elissa. When you walk to Ocean Star, you pass a marina where you can see pelicans and cormorants.

We had a group of eight and all felt it was well worth it. Short film and then walked through both levels ......lots to see and learn about......many products are made out of oil and how much is involved when they decide to dig into ocean for oil.....Won't complain as much on the price of gas.

not that much into "oil rigs" or the industry but it was neat to get to tour a real off shore oil rig and see how everything works. It took about an hour but would have taken about 2 hours if we stopped/read/did all the interactive activities. The view from the 3'rd floor of the rig is really cool as you can see most of the bay.

We spotted this museum from our cruise ship which was literally a short walking distance from the cruise terminal. A cheap admission fee for what you get to see. The museum is actually an old oil rig in itself. Lots of cool things to see. Maybe a bit over a young child's head, but still cool stuff to look at. The gift shop is neat with lots of things for purchase.
