Owner description: Formerly the Nimitz Museum, the complex is now America's only museum centered on World War II's Pacific campaign. Since 1968, the Museum has expanded to occupy a six-acre campus and gained a reputation as one of the premier military museums in the nation. Over the years the Museum was upgraded and enlarged, and the campus grew to accommodate the Memorial Courtyard, the Plaza of Presidents and the Japanese Garden of Peace. We opened the expanded George H. W. Bush Gallery in 2009. The Gallery's state-of-the-art 33,000 square foot exhibition features 40 media installations, approximately 900 artifacts in 97 climate-controlled cases, 15 macro-artifacts, and hundreds of photographs. Two blocks east of the main campus is the Pacific Combat Zone. Recently reopened after an $8 million renovation. The PCZ is also home to our popular WWII Pacific Combat Program that takes place on set weekends throughout the year.

It took us two partial days to see this museum, as there is so much information. We became overwhelmed after spending 4 hours and then went back the next day. The exhibits are thoughtfully done and do their best to present not only the strategic part of the war but also the very personal side, along with the hardships. The battle area, an partially outdoor exhibit a few blocks away, is also well worth a visit.

Be sure and try to make it to the outdoor live demonstration of weaponry and a simulated Pacific Island attack. This is only put on a few times each month.

Located in Fredericksburg, Texas, birthplace of Admiral Nimitz, the museum is a world class example with displays illuminating the activities of the Pacific Theater in World War II. Audio and visual multimedia enhance the experience. There is so much to see and hear that the ticket is valid for two days.

This is an impressive museum and structure, and it does an excellent job of telling the story of the years leading up to World War II, and then the battles and engagements in the Pacific.

The admission price is quite reasonable, and the ticket is good for 48 hours. We had a busy schedule that day, and were only able to visit for about 2.5 hours … long enough to make it through the entire museum, but at a quicker pace than that needed to absorb all of the exhibits. One could easily spend the better part of a day touring the museum.

Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in American and military history.
