If you happen to be in the region, Mount Macedon is one place that you need to go. Located about 45 minutes out of the heart of Melbourne, the trip to the Mount Macedon lookout is a lovely drive. Winding roads past enormous houses with landscaped gardens leads you to the pinnacle where a spectacular view awaits. The cross is amazing overlooking the vast Victorian country and the city skyline.

If you’re lucky enough like we were, you can chance being up at the cross alone. The silence is so peaceful. There is also a cafe at the lookout which appeared to be closed when we were there on a Sunday but it is large enough to cater for parties.

Mt Macedon is 1000ft above sea level and the top of the mount is marked by a huge memorial cross. Fabulous views fron there, another look out on the walk up, lovely gardens, cafe & carpark. On the road up to the mount are several picnic areas, pine forest, and some rain forest/fern glens. It's very prettty at any time of the year, really special when it's snowing. There's lots of homes/estates with gardens full of native plants a magnificent Rhodeodendrums. gardens are often open on weekends in spring, usually entry is a gold coin for charity. Mt Macedon village has a general store -trading Post and a Hotel. It's about an hours drive from Melbourne and a lovely area to explore. Great wine area also.

The Cross is a must to visit for those visiting the Mt Macedon. There is a nice coffee place up in the mountain as well.

Mt Macedon is the highest peak in the Macedon Ranges, part of the Great Dividing Range that comes down the east coast of Australia. Mt Macedon is almost 1000m up (approx 3000 odd feet) and on a clear day offers spectacular views across the western region of Melbourne and beyond. The key attraction here is a large cross that serves as a memorial to lives lost in the First World War. In addition there is a nice tea shop next to the main car park that has great views across Woodend and areas to the West of Mt Macedon.

While in the area it is also worth visiting the villages of the Macedon Ranges and also some of the wineries of the area.
