“Save yourself and don't go here”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 June 2011

A group of us went here to celebrate a birthday.. What came from the kitchen after an hours wait couldn't be called food. The mango barramundi and the quarry barramundi were unpalatable and we didn't touch them. The sloppy salad with packet grated cheese on top and the extra dry pre cooked and then reheated potato was dry and not edible either. It was something this restaurant should have been embarrassed to serve up. Shame on an area with access to fresh produce to serve up such rot. Save your stomachs and money and head to the kookaburra or the local pub.

“Nice location but mixed food”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 April 2011

We decided to try the Quarry due to the menu and the nice location on the river/creek. The interior is comfortable if a little basic but the food was more mixed. We started off with a stuffed mushroom which looked pretty terrrible but tasted lovely and left us wanting more. Our mains were where things started to go down hill with a dried out flavourless mound of potato on each plate. My kangeroo was covered in an over-sweet plum sauce and the meat itself tasted pretty non-descipt. My partners barramundi was also pretty average and not at the level of a $35 meal.

The waiting staff were lovely though and kindly arranged for some tasty fresh mashed potato when I mentioned my disappointment with what I had previously received. We didn't feel the urge to stay for dessert and probably wouldn't rush back.

“lovely staff but food left me confused...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 January 2011

We decided to leave the foodie bossum of Melbourne for the weekend and set sail for the mighty Grampians. We had big plans for lots of bush walking so I packed a high energy sustainable lunch (according to some cookbook!) and we worked up a sweat in the searing 35 degree heat.

When evening arrived it turned out that our sustainable lunch had worn off and we were too tired and hungry to cook at the hostel. So with lots of enthusiasm we decided to sample Halls Gap's finest eateries! With only the Lonely Planet and Grampians tourist guide for help we had two options 'The Quarry' or 'Balconies'. After reading a review The Quarry was cited as having an extensive wine list and fine food..we were sold!

We booked in advance and like others they did not have a record of our booking when we arrived. Luckily there was space and we were seated by the window. The restaurant is so strange, if Gordan Ramsey visited he would describe the menu as 'confused'. It seems to have a strong Asian influence but then also have reams of pasta, fish, chicken and meat dishes. I would guess that it mainly caters for hungry groups of tourists which is fine but always best to clearly know your audience and advertise accordingly.

I played it safe and stuck with the parma which was yummy and a G & T with a kiddie straw (quite a funny touch). My dining partner had the aforementioned steak with bacon and cheese which he ordered medium rare...we waited and waited and it eventually turned up extremely well done! The staff are so lovely and we felt quite bad sending it back but it was just such a shame that a lovely hunk of meat had been cooked so badly. The chef arrived with an apology (he was also lovely) and explained that the cheese melting process under the grill sometimes cooks the steak a bit more. We had already guessed this...ah ha good deduction Watson!

A second steak arrived about 20 minutes later with lots of apologies. The steak was beautiful! It was a great cut of meat, totally massive and covered in a nice sauce. We finished with a chocolate mud cake (a bargain at $5!) and left full but intregued about Quarry.

The staff are lovely, the service is great but it's almost as if it's trying to be more than it is. As Gordan would advise, simplfy the menu, reduce the price, pick your audience (perhaps specialise in good steak), work on the ambience and don't cover a lovely bit of meat with cheese!

I don't think we will be back but we're sorry Quarry, you guys are awesome!

“Actually, it was pretty good!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 December 2010

It's a struggle for any restaurant in peak season, the place was fully booked but our requested table for two was reserved by the window. We did not mind a wait of about 15 minutes for the first course to arrive. The staff were attentive and pleasant, and the meal was well presented, good quality, and good value. So too were the wines by the glass, which is often not the case.
Location is handy, plenty of parking in the vicinity.
A good effort for a small town. We will dine there again on our next visit.

“"A memorable dining experience" - I guess that's true!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 October 2010

We were a group of eight adults, one child and one infant, away for the weekend in the Grampians, and we were looking forward to a nice meal on Friday evening, after we had arrived in Halls Gap. When we turned up at 6pm the hostess told us there was no booking for us, despite one of our group making a telephone reservation two weeks earlier. Another hostess came over and told us the same thing, telling us she'd have to check with the chef to see if there was enough food. We told her we'd spoken to Steve, and I presume he was also the chef because he came out next and asked us who was saying he'd taken the reservation. All this time, we're standing there, with two children, waiting. Eventually, they agreed that we had made a booking and hadn't put it in the book. One hostess then said to the other, "Where shall we put 'em?" and then a minute or so later took us to a table.
The service was poor overall, and the food was mostly bland - particularly the Barramundi and the Sweet and Sour chicken. As five of us had ordered one of these two dishes, and all agreed they were poor, we decided to give feedback. The hostess did not take this kindly, telling us the Barramundi had been on the menu for six years and was very popular. The hostess did not apologise, just defended the food, although she said she would give feedback to the chef. We were extremely disappointed with the overall experience, and it's not cheap either, so we would not recommend this restaurant to anyone unless they up their game, and improve their food offering.
To be fair, we were offered a 10% discount when we came to pay the bill, and if this had been done graciously, it would have been a lot better than the attitude we got from the hostess.
