A lovely campsite in a wonderful beachside location. This is an old fashioned style campsite, no pre booked pitches, not many rules, no electric hook ups! There are plenty of facilities dotted about, and main block near the reception area, they do get cleaned regularly, but the weather wasn't brilliant (tail end of hurricane Gert) when we were there, so sometimes they could do with extra cleaning. The clubhouse wasn't for us (big screens showing football), so I can't comment on them. It is over a tidal causeway which floods twice a day, and is a long way from anywhere, so take lots of your own provisions!

Room Tip: You can camp where you like.

It was the last few days of the school summer holidays and the day after the August bank holiday Monday. We were a party of 3 (myself, my wife and my daughter of 16) we also had our 2 dogs (Yorkshire Terriers). Due to the fact that we had dogs with us meant we had to camp in a designated area. This was not a problem as it was fairly close to the main buildings. At the top of the field we were in was a newly constructed toilet blocks. These were (for the most part) clean and didn't smell too bad for a public toilet. As other reviewers have mentioned this is mainly due to the type of people who use the site and how they respect the site. As this is not the first time we have visited Shell Island we were aware that there is usually a queue for the showers and sometimes for the dish wash up area this was expected for the amount of people that use the facilities (here's a tip, don't go first thing which is between 8am and 9am as these times are usually the busiest times), the showers are open till 1pm and are closed for cleaning between 1pm and 3pm). The shop does have everything you need from a small convenieince store and the camp equipment shop has all the rest of the essentials for camping gear. We purchased a fire bucket and with a bag of logs costing only £4 which lasted the evening. There were a group of people in the next field over that stayed up late one evening and were a bit loud but quietened down around midnight. If you feel that anyone is misbehaving please contact securtiy and they will have a word. There was an incident last year when a group in the tent next to us were rowdy all night and were asked to quieten down and were asked to leave the site the next day. There is always going to be a loud group but most will adhere to the rule after a quiet word from security. All in all not a bad site and considering it's size I think that it's not too bad. I agree with some of the other visitors and it could be kept a lot tidier and a patrolling security guard would not go amiss. We have been visiting the site for many years now and I believe that the owners are making an effort to upgrade the site but visitors also need to play their part in keeping the site clean for the next visitor.

Room Tip: Get a pitch close to the main buildings as they are normally a bit quieter.

We have come to shell island for the past 11 years, so that tells you something.
The site and setting is fantastic, completely ruined by certain campers.
If you get a good pitch with good neighbors it's great, if you get bad neighbors then it's awful.
This year we had dogs walking round our little field, doing their mess, with the owners unbotherd. We were kept awake til the early hours by foul mouths.
Security should be much better.
The amount of litter was terrible, why they don't employ a couple of people to go round, I don't know.
They seem to hope good campers will clean up after the bad campers.
The cafe, in my opinion is overpriced and serves bad food.
Head into barmouth, and you'll pass a pub, with a chippy called nor bar hidden at the back, this is superb though a 15minute drive.
The shop on site is dear but reasonable for a site shop.
Will we come again, next year?
Too right we will (and hope for better neighbors)

I attended here with my young family and we won't be visiting again.

Good points - on the coast with an amaxinv beach, and the views are stunning.

Bad points - 300 acre site with one shower and dish washing area is poor planning and gets very busy with long queues. There are toilets dotted around the site. Ours was always dirty.
The site rules sound great but non one seems to take any notice.
Don't be fooled. 300 acres fits in a lot of people. It was very noisy during the day and night. As soon as it was dark the parties started. Loud music, swearing and drunks running around the tent is not my idea of fun. This went on until the early hours each night. This was not just one group it seems that this is the place they can get away with it.
We've camped at a lot of places and love being outdoors with fab views. This place seems to attract the wrong sort. There's clearly no respect for others.
There's plenty more places to visit.
Unless you like boy racer cars, loud music until 3am and locking your tent everyone you leave it.. avoid.

We visited shell island for a family camping trip over August bank holiday weekend. Returning following and amazing trip the same time previous year. Shell island itself never lets you down, what an amazing place excellent pitches. We had a VW van, awning and a tent 2 dogs and 4 grown up kids in our pitch. Along with a big fire bucket which kept us happily toasty on an evening. This is one of the attractions to shell that rules are fair.. the sand dunes are out of this world (make sure the kids have a sledge) hours of fun!! Dogs allowed on beach etc... water taps easy to find and plenty of loos etc.. another great factor is they have a cut off for numbers of people allowed to camp so when they are full you can still move freely...
on our visit this year we were a little let down by the hygiene of facilities... toilets very smelly sanitary bins overflowing. I can't actually believe how disgusting women can be!! If the sanitary bins full wrap in tissue and find a bin??? Would you really leave on floor for someone else to deal with?? Showers I had bogies on the wall hairs everywhere and people had left empty toiletry bottles on the floor.. now this is down to the class of the people using them not necessarily the sites fault.. although maybe on busy times they should have people checking more often...
Also on this visit we experienced noisy neighbours until 4-5am then there kids screaming round our tents at 7am so was a little frustrating... No respect for others!! Camping is fun and yes you should be able to be free to do as you please but nothing wrong with showing respect for other campers...
Staff on reception seemed friendly, and were really concerned when we shared our comments. The following day we did start to see improvements..
