It is what it is I guess, plenty of well maintained grounds for camping, overlooking the coastline, harbour or woodland. On site bar, restaurant, shops and amusement arcade. We've always enjoyed our trips to Shell island and will be going again soon.

Fantastic site. I haven't been to the site for over 30 years and it hasn't changed. Its a fantastic site with loads of room and great facilities. Recommend it to any one for anything from a one night to a two week stay.

The island is simply beautiful, really quiet out of season. Great for cycling, kite flying etc Facilities are fine (no idea why huge moths like the pink doors in the ladies loo?). Staff really friendly and helpful...we have to save this precious island, sign the petition please. We'll be back in September!

We were here over the bank holiday weekend at the end of May. We found a great spot with amazing views over the site, the beach and the causeway. Choosing your own pitch certainly has its advantages, but having never been before it was pot luck we got somewhere so nice. We based it largely due to the short walk to the new toilet block.

That's the downside of the site. The block we used was new, but the others looked pretty ropey. Also only one shower block for such a huge site is poor. There was also quite a problem with litter, the people running the island must know this is an issue and it could be better managed.

We were disturbed one night by singing/music until gone midnight, obviously no monitoring by the site management of the 10pm curfew on that.

The views and freedom of pitching are probably hard to beat, but facilities wise and site management wise there's much better to be had. Unfortunately I doubt we'll be back.

Just got back from a weekend here. 6 of us went (3 couples) and we loved every moment. Hints and tips:
●Remember to check the tide before you travel i.e. we had to arrive before 8pm Friday, and leave before 10am or after 2pm today.
● Don't even bother trying to drive along the road when the tide is still in. Is wrecking your car engine worth more than waiting 30 minutes?
● Don't bother buying the wifi. You only get it by the entrance, plus get away and switch off completely.
● Take fly spray and citronella candles. When the sun comes out, so do the midgies.
● There is miles and miles of fields and toilet blocks. Drive around the whole island before you decide where to pitch your tent.
● Take spare toilet roll. When you go the toilet with it, there will be some there. When you go without, they will have ran out. Sods law.
● Take windbreakers. You are on an island. You will need them. And you will probably move them about 5 times over the weekend.
● Take black bags for your rubbish. Keep the place clean and follow the rules so your neighbours can enjoy themselves too.
● Treat yourself to eating in the cafe at least one of the nights. Burger & chips for around £5. 12 inch pizza around £10. Great selection.
● The shop sells everything so don't worry if you forgot something.
● Go for a walk around the island. Enjoy the beach, the sand dunes and the sunset.
● Don't be a muppet. Don't drink drive. Dont drive around with the kids sitting on the back of an open boot. Just because there is no police on the island, doesn't mean people don't get hurt.
● Buy a firepit £25, and a bbq £20. Well worth it for the weekend. Then give it away on the final day. No point taking home and getting your car dirty. Plus makes you feel good.

Then maybe when you come back the following year, someone might pass you their bbq and firepit
