Description: South of Beale is Memphis' first gastropub! At the bar, we focus on unique cocktails along with local / regional beers from the area. Our food menu is new-American style with a few extra twists!

South of Beale is a nice-ish gastro-pub style restaurant any easy-ish walk from the center of Memphis heading, well, south of Beale Street. They’ve got a number of small plates, a few of which are suitable for vegetarians, plus a few mains that would fit the V-bill as well.

I had the cheese plate which was a selection of three cheeses – a Blue which was good but really just tasted like a basic blue cheese, a mustard seed infused hard cheese which was really good, especially with the homemade applesauce they serve it with, and a porter-cheddar which I also enjoyed. This was served with sesame crackers, which were fine, thoughI love a good cheese board served with bread. This also came with candied pecans which were weirdly soft. My wife suggested they may have been roasted.

We also shared the brussels sprouts side which normally comes with maple syrup and bacon. Of course we had it without the bacon, and they were able to do that still with the syrup and it was really tasty. They were perfectly cooked and just lightly sweetened by the maple syrup, and nicely charred as well.

I also had the Kiss Off cocktail (the name, at least, a nice tribute to my Violent Femmes fanmanship) which was a Caribbean inspired rum drink with spices, Proseco, and a sprig of rosemary which went delightfully up my nose while I drank it.

My wife got the Zaka Bowl, which was vegan and came with quinoa, various fresh vegetables, and a champagne vinaigrette dressing on the side (which she thought the dish didn’t need). The vegetables were delicious, though she would’ve cook the zucchini longer, but says that could be just a matter of preference.

The place was crowded when we entered, but fairly empty by the time we left. (We arrived at 7pm) and the staff were very nice.

Also they had noted on their menu specifically which items were vegan, vegetarian and gluten free which is always appreciated by those of us who have those diets.

South of Beale is a certified sustainable, project green, restaurant so they definitely put some thought into the health and sources of their food. Well done SOB!

(Pro-tip: Make sure to take a picture of yourself under the sign that says “S.O.B.” and send it to all your friends!)

Oh, and they give you a free amuse-bouche of popcorn when your arrive! Who doesn’t want free popcorn?!

Tucked right off of Main & Talbot is the magical culinary gem, South Of Beale (SOB). We actually drove past it the first time because we were looking for something much more flamboyant in signage. The atmosphere is cool and perfect for meeting friends for a drink or enjoy their fantastic menu!
To start off, they brought us a little bowl of cajun spiced kettle corn when we sat down. We came in for lunch and ordered the SOB burger special, truffle Parmesan fries, crab cake sliders, and the smoked Gouda mac & cheese. If that last one didn’t catch you attention, it should have! Smoked Gouda Mac & Cheese is my new go-to for life! The sauce is creamy and multidimensional in flavor! The angus burger is cooked to perfect and lightly seasoned to allow the homemade pickle and SOB sauce to come through. The truffle Parmesan fries are so flavorful you can smell them as the plates are placed. The crab cakes are light and clean. The cake is mostly crab with no fillers. The sauce under the cake is a wonderful pop of flavor to really bring out the freshness of the crab.
10/10 would recommend!! Cannot wait for a return trip to Memphis! We will be stopping again!

We stopped at SOB to enjoy some snacks and adult beverages on their outdoor patio. Their menu has a number of interesting items on it; we tried the maple bacon braised brussel sprouts. They also bring you some awesome popcorn while you're waiting. Good service.

Don’t write many reviews - but after we ate at SOB I had to let everyone know. Small menu but the great thing is that is different from most Castro pubs. Food was incredible and full of flavor. The pork and shrimp egg rolls were amazing. But the Zaka Bowl was absolutely incredible. Light and fresh with so much flavor. Service and atmosphere great as well. We will be back!

My wife and I went to South of Beale for our anniversary, and the food, service, and drinks were all spectacular. We made reservations earlier in the evening through Open Table as we saw Jerry Seinfeld at the Orpheum prior to dinner. When we arrived, they had our table set up with a black tablecloth and a reserved sign, and we were seated right away. The ahi tuna appetizer was delicious, and you can't go wrong with the crispy fish and the gouda mac and cheese. We will definitely go back in the future.
