We stayed at Home Farm Cottage for 7 nights over the October half term as a family of 4 - 2 adults and 2 children ages 10 & 13 and our small dog. We arrived late on the Friday and were greeted by a lovely warm and cosy cottage immaculately cleaned and presented. In the morning we saw the true extent of the cottage and setting and felt completely at home straight away and fell in love with it all. The children especially loved the Zip wire in the grounds. We walked to the loach most days and did the loop walk a couple of times ... it’s a hilly climb but the views are amazing when you reach the peak. We took bikes as my son likes to ride and it’s was ideal to get him back and forth to the zip wire, loch and around the estate. We were looking for a week of relaxation and refuelling and that’s exactly what we got. The cottage is beautiful inside and out and is extremely well equipped, the washing machine was a godsend with all the mucky clothes from exploring! The log fire was on my list of requirements and it hit the spot and there is unlimited supply of logs in the bike store/ shed provided by the owners. The beds are very comfortable, you get lost in the duvet. You need to get in a car to the nearest shop but this didn’t bother us as we have to at home anyway and Stranraer is less than a 10 minute drive away. Great base for exploring this part of Scotland. Both Kate and Angus were very friendly even workers on the Estate were extremely polite and friendly when we were out and about. If you’re looking for a break in a high quality property with the benefits the estate brings and option to explore the west coast of Scotland book up you will not be disappointed. We have found a gem and are hoping to return very soon.
Home Farm Cottage looks pretty and inviting as you approach it, set in its own large, lawned area. Inside it is immaculate with quality furnishings and equipment throughout. The cottage will comfortably sleep 5, but being just the 2 of us, plus dog, we only used the downstairs as the king sized bedroom downstairs had its own en-suite shower room. Outside there is a sturdy wooden table and seating, so we often sat out enjoying the views over the estate gardens with the occasional visit from deer and red squirrels.
The owners, Kate and Angus, have made gravel path walkways around the estate and down to Loch Ryan, so you can wander either for short strolls or longer hikes without getting wet, muddy feet (or paws). We enjoyed the walks around the estate so much, as they were so varied with gardens,/woodland/fields/lochside, that we only left the property twice during our week's stay - once to the local supermarket in Stranraer and once to visit Castle Kennedy gardens (which are very good). However, had we wanted, there were plenty of places to visit within 1/2 hr to 1 hrs drive away.
Kate and Angus live in the estate house and are discreet hosts - readily available by a phone call if necessary, and one of them will drop by after arrival to check if everything is in order. A welcome pack of milk, bread, butter, tea, coffee and sugar is left to get you started too.
Home Farm Cottage set in the beautiful estate surroundings is a unique and special place to stay. We have already booked again for next year - we loved it - and so did our dog!
Beautiful cottage (Home Farm) set in picturesque grounds. Near the shore of Loch Ryan and a drive from Galloway National Park, this cottage is perfectly located for a peaceful getaway but with lots to do if you choose to.
We celebrated my mother's 70th and the cottage was a fantastic base for our celebrations. 2 young children loved the facilities on the estate including the zipwire, trampoline and Wendy house; not to mention the feeding of the ponies and spontaneous visits from red deer.
The facilities inside the cottage were outstanding. The kitchen has everything you would need. There's a relaxing living area with wood burning stove. Beds are super comfortable and 2 small bathrooms had everything for small families or groups.
The added bonus is that they are also dog friendly which is always a welcome aspect for us. The hosts make you feel welcome but you are left to your own devices in the ample space surrounding the cottage.
Our recent stay at Home Farm Cottage was very peaceful and relaxing, just what our family needed. Kate and Angus are very hospitable hosts and are always on hand if needed. I would recommend this cottage to everyone
Home Farm Cottage is set in its own grounds within the stunning Corsewall Estate, run by Angus and Kate. The cottage has recently been renovated and it has been done to an amazingly high standard. From the beautiful heritage colours of the painted walls, to the gorgeous crockery, stunning woollen throws on all the beds and chairs and the high quality bedding and curtains, this is truly a luxurious experience! The taste of the owners is exquisite and everything has been finished to the highest standard. The kitchen is very well equipped even down to thoughtful extras such as weighing scales and a stick blender.
On arrival at the estate, we were in awe as we drove up the drive amongst the beautiful rhododendron and trees, not quite able to believe that this would be our home for a week. The cottage was open for our arrival and we were welcomed with a welcome pack of milk, bread, butter, tea, coffee and Kate's beautiful home made chocolate brownies, just the thing after our drive from Edinburgh! After unpacking and settling in for about an hour, Angus popped by to say hello and to check that we had everything we needed.
Angus and Kate live in the big house on the estate with their three children and their lovely dogs but we barely saw them. They were welcoming, informative, available if we needed them and friendly without being obstrusive. When we failed to locate any balloons or banners to decorate the cottage for our sons birthday the next day ( neither supermarket had anything in and we were too late for the local shops) they very kindly gave us some of their own and also sorted out a firepit for us to use so we could toast marshmallows to end a lovely birthday.
My boys (age 11 and 12) loved exploring the grounds. There are many interesting nooks and crannies and trees everywhere some of which are climbable. There is a lovely play area hidden in the woods especially for kids which features a brilliant flying fox, a 14 foot trampoline, and a swing and chute set. The lawns around the big house are great for running around on too and Kate and Angus make it very clear that they are happy for guests to use all the grounds and not to feel shy about it!
The weather was fantastic the week we were there and so we didn't need (or want!) the log burner on but the cottage would be amazingly cosy in the winter. We spend most of our mealtimes outside the front of the house using the wooden table and chairs there. We were often treated to a wildlife display on the front lawn and saw deer, foxes, willie wagtails, robins, buzzards and bunnies galore amongst other things.
The cottage is in Kirkcolm which is an easy 10 minute drive from Stranraer where we were able to access Morrisons and Lidl. Apparently Asda will deliver online shopping to the cottage. There is a village shop in Kirkcolm itself which we used for milk and postcards. There is a local pub too but we didn't use it.
From our beautiful base we visited the stunning Killantringan beach twice, Lady bay, Port Patrick and Dunskey castle ruins, Cream of Galloway, the Gem museum and Culzean castle.
We enjoyed the cottage so much that we have just arranged to revisit next year - something we have never felt we wanted to do in years of renting holiday cottages - until now!
We felt that the cottage represents very good value for money - I cannot overstate how luxurious the cottage really is. We cannot wait to return to this little piece of rural paradise in 2019! Thank you Kate and Angus!
