“Spectacular location but a missed opportunity”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 May 2012

This hotel is sited in a truly spectacular location above the harbour and not far from great beaches, including Sandwood Bay.
The bedroom, at the back of the hotel, was OK although heating was by a small electric convector heater and so the bathroom was like a fridge.
The lounge area was comfortable and pleasant with good views down to the fishing harbour. Dinning was OK but what a missed opportunity! Despite being next to one of the best fishing ports in the country there was no fish on the dinner menu on the day we stayed. There could have been a choice.

I stayed in late January midweek on business for a couple of nights and tend to echo the last reviewer, in fact I think I may have had the same room as the decor sounds familiar! Although dated the room was comfortable and warm (electric heater dealt well with cold still weather outside) and the dinner was good given the fact that customers are obviously few and far between at that time of year. Breakfast was plentiful and tasty and the owner pleasant and helpful. The free internet though limited was fast enough in the lounge and I'd have no problem returning on business again.

Stayed here one night end of January so not a lot of choice of places open. There was one other guest (on business). The smell of old greasy food was almost overpowering on entering the hotel. Our room overlooking the harbour was large with a double and one single bed but rather a lot of furniture. The decor was very 80s and could do with updating. Large comfortable bed and clean sheets. The water was hot. However, the noise from the windows buzzing and humming with the easterly wind all night long and a cold draught (due to some dodgy window installation i think) was very annoying and rather spooky. The radiators in the hotel were all off but we had a small electric heather in our room so we managed to get the temperature up above zero! The en suite had been updated I think but very dark wall - black/brown and a shower curtain (never good). We laughed about it but would not be everybody's cup of tea. Our evening meal was from the freezer but breakfast ok but very cold dining room at 8am before the electric heaters got going. Shame as the hotel has a lovely position and this is a lovely area to explore. Rather pricey. We stayed in cheaper places during our week's holiday with far better facilities, good fresh food and better value for money.

We stayed in the Kinlochberivie hotel in August for our first anniversary as we wanted to go somewhere secluded. We arrived and the young man behind reception did not even so much as crack a smile and was very unfriendly. The hotel smelled so bad it was catching on the back of our throats! Dinner at the hotel was terrible, burnt and a long time to be served. but did not expect it to be great after the cold greeting on arrival. To make matters worse we could not sleep as the window was rattling all night. Complete waste of money! Would of prefered camping!.

We have just returned from a visit to the restaurant which we were hoping was good as we are staying just around the corner. The signs on the road said food available all day, we arrived at 5pm and all that was available was sandwiches and cookies so we decided to stay until the restaurant opened at 6pm. The young waitress was very friendly and kept checking if we wanted anything. We ordered a prawn platter each for starter and were presented with icy cold prawns, limp brown around the edges salad and cold damp bread. Our main course was rump steak, I had asked for mine medium and my husband had asked for well done. My steak was very thick, and so raw inside the meat had not even warmed, it was cold and very bloody. My husbands steak was slightly better but still very bloody, both were served with a serving of semi-raw chips. We arrived freezing cold and left even colder, there was no heating on and the cold offerings made us even colder. We didnt complain as I just wanted to get out as quickly as possible and we shall not be returning.
