We were met by Margaret in Stornoway after we got off the ferry and she showed us the way to the cottage.
It was about a fifteen minute drive to the cottage and all through some beautiful little villages and gorgeous views.
When we got to the cottage we all sat and had a lovely chat and Margaret explained some great places for us to visit during our stay, along with nice restaurants and other food places that came with a good reputation.
Margaret's son Finlay showed us all the central and hot water heating controls just to make sure we were familiar with everything.
We planned lots of things to do during our stay and Margaret and Finlay gave us some great ideas for other places to visit (which we did).
When Margaret and Finlay left we started to unpack our cases and get settled, but being wide awake and in an island we had never visited we decided to visit Luskentyre, we jumped back in the car and made our way down the long driveway at Suil Cottage and headed for Harris, it's a really easy drive and the full journey was broken up with gorgeous scenery and really dramatic mountains, we arrived at Luskentyre and stood with our mouths open for ages taking in the stunning scenery.
Our week in Lewis was one of the best weeks away we've ever had, weather was fantastic, there were NO midgies the full time we were on the island, and we were out for sunrise most mornings and always out for sunsets every evening so we spent plenty of time exploring the island.
My favourite part of the day was always the return journey back to Suil Cottage, you come up the road and the cottage is sitting on the right hand side of a long private driveway which always put a smile on my face to see.
The things that made our holiday:
Without a doubt the most friendly host we have ever booked a holiday through, communication before we arrived was fantastic and we've communicated since we left to make sure our return journey was fine. Margaret and her wonderful family are the perfect host, nothing was any trouble and there were plenty of contact numbers left for us in case we needed any help urgently.
The Cottage: Suil Cottage is just amazing, it's got a high vantage point and the most breathtaking views from the full of the house, a full 360 degree vista,
It has everything you need and a whole lot more, there are board games, dvd's books (amazing books) and lots more, there are lots of binoculars to view the amazing wildlife that is literally a small walk from the back of the cottage.
There's peace and quiet and privacy, some things that you tend not to find in places nowadays.
We are on EE and I had a full 4G coverage the whole time at Suil Cottage, I was never without phone reception at anytime between the cottage and Stornoway.
I never missed the fact that there wasn't any wifi, we genuinely went to Lewis to chill and see a beautiful part of the world, sometimes being disconnected from the grid felt amazing.
Our base in Suil Cottage made everything perfect. We really love this cottage.
It's been said so many times by previous guests and I feel that I must say it too, but the welcome pack left by Margaret and her family was the most we've ever had, I'm not going to list everything but I can tell you that if you arrived on the island and never got any provisions in at the supermarket you would still be fine. We were blown away with all the little things that Margaret had thought of.
Amazing Hosts, Amazing Cottage and a beautiful island, both parts, Lewis and Harris, both so different and both so breathtakingly stunning.
We would love to come back one day, and the next time we do we know it'll be Suil Cottage we stay.
Thank you Margaret and your wonderful family for an amazing holiday in your wonderful cottage.
This cottage is perfect place for your stay in Lewis.
Margaret came to meet us when we got off the ferry, just in case we couldn’t find the cottage. She gave us a lovely warm welcome to this wonderful island. Margaret gave us a tour of the cottage and a phone number to call should we need her, she also told us of all the wonderful places that we should try to visit, she had little maps and pointed out the things that would be of interest to us. The cottage is very cosy and very clean, it has everything you need for a stay. All the amenities are in excellent working order.
Margaret had left a welcome basket with goodies in it - crisps, biscuits, cakes. In the fridge was milk, eggs, bacon and the famous Stornoway Black Pudding, and a fresh loaf of bread. In the bathroom there was unopened toothbrushes and toothpaste and toiletries, I have never experienced such a level of thoughtfulness when hiring any other accommodation.
This is a fantastic family friendly cottage, it has wonderful views of the sea and the magnificent hills, and binoculars are provided so that you can watch for dolphins, seals, whales or any of the many different types of birds that also inhabit the island.
I cannot wait until we return to Suil Cottage
This cottage was perfect in all aspects. It had great views of the sea, and the cottage was presented at very high standard. The owners left a welcome pack which contained everything to get us started. We would definitely return again and we would recommend to anybody about this cottage.
This was a great location for us, quiet and overlooking the ocean. Lots of beautiful scenery nearby to explore, and good access to Stornoway, about a 10 minute drive.
The host has included a lot of books, games, and provisions for guests.
