Only stayed one night and very convenient for the ferry. Very friendly reception staff and despite some of reviews saying otherwise we had an excellent breakfast. Dated decor and TLC required in some areas. Bedrooms were a decent size , furniture was dated and utilitarian. Bedding very average ,only 4 ft 6 ins bed so not a good night sleep. Bathroom in grave need of update and deep clean, fan did not work, shower screen was incubating an interesting sub culture, did not want to use the bath /shower. Lino looks revolting, brown stain, think it is only the way the pattern forms but really does the hotel no favours. Breakfast staff efficient and got on with making sure everything was topped up. Major issue with security as given code for fire door to access our floor from the car park via a wet and slippy fire escape ,iron bridge over a cellar ? entrance . This seems to be a trash area and badly in need in clearing and cleaning up. The gardens heralded as a feature were overgrown and used as a dump around the fire escape , shame. Fire door code not required as it was propped open and still that way later that night and again at 6 am when I went out to the car. Presume it was open all night!!. Quiet room just underwhelming . Breakfast in large ballroom which was quite grand and traditional much better decorated than our bedroom if not in the right era it was in keeping with the hotel.

This is a lovely Victorian hotel with period features, right near the harbour. Spacious clean family room with all you need. Lovely comfy beds. Excellent helpful friendly staff who go out of their way to help. Breakfast was outstanding as was the evening meal we had in the restaurant. They had a very good selection of beers wines and of cause whisky. I would love to return to this hotel again. I thought this would be a noisy hotel but I was wrong. Very peaceful.

Room Tip: Great for sea views over looking the harbour.

On holiday here asked around for somewhere to go for an evening meal, the recommended venue was full they suggested somewhere else, also full.we were told we could get something upstairs in the Stromness Hotel nobody had mentioned this to us and we have no local knowledge, to be honest our expectations were low.How surprised we were to find not only great food but matched by excellent staff whose professionalism in service defied their years, friendly helpful nothing was a problem

My wife and I were on a trip to Scotland and one of the things we wanted to do was to visit the Orkney Islands. We had reservations at an inn but for several reasons decided not to stay at that particular accommodation. We were scrambling trying to find a place to stay for the night and walked in to see if there were any rooms available. Luckily there was one room left which we quickly snatched up. The lady at the front desk was an expat from Minnesota (I believe). She was very friendly and very helpful. The room was very clean and very well done. We had two single beds but they were comfortable. The restaurant was excellent with great food and friendly staff. We wasn't planning on finding a room at the last minute but in hindsight we are glad that we did. The Stomness Hotel was a great place to stay and we would highly recommend it to anyone travelling to the Orkney Islands..

This historic hotel on Orkney was like stepping back into the past. It was old and had the expected rustic character of a time gone by. Dining for both breakfast and evening meals was excellent in a classically appointed room. Our room was not fancy, but was certainly comfortable.
