My husband our 7 year old son and traveled to the Royal Hotel on Tuesday the 27th October for 3 nights. We arrived at 12 pm lunchtime and was told our room would not be ready until 4 pm so we took a walk down to Woolacombe which is very beautiful, it is like a small village with some great activities including crazy golf for children. The beach is breath taking and has a lovely cafe built up in the rocks that sells nice coffee, ice cream, snacks and hot food. Upon returning to the hotel at 3.30 pm we were given a room key. When we opened the door we were very taken back at what we saw, the carpets were all stained , the wall paper was hanging off the walls and has gone from pink to brown, The radiator was on and was leaking on to the carpet, half of the radiator was completely thick and held together with rust which was dangerously sharp. The bathroom window was broken and had a notice on which read.....see photo. The bath has a huge crack from one end to the middle and the lino on the floor was all ripped. When we booked this holiday we trusted the photos on the hotels website and booked a room with a sea view that had a double bed with a separating room that had bunk beds. There were no signs of holes, rust, broken windows etc....My husband complained to reception who gave us another key to a different room, this one was on the other side of the building and was even worse! I could fit my fingers in the rusty gaps surrounding the patio door so we returned to our original room. My husband went to see the hotel manager, very politely he explained that we did not book one room with a single bed and a double camp bed in such appalling condition, we felt extremely deceived by the hotels website and wanted our money back so we could go and find alternative accommodation, several times he refused. We had payed a few hundred pounds for this short break so without a refund were unable to go somewhere else. After much debate we had no choice but to stay here. The hotel is scruffy through out. The pool was also not very clean. I have been a swimming teacher for over 20 years and I decided not to use it, so we took our son swimming to the North Devon Leisure center Pool in Barnstaple. It is very nice and has fun sessions with floats and inflatables for children a fantastic children's play area and a good cafe for coffee, milkshake and snacks and is only £1.60 to park at the leisure center all day. The restaurant at the Royal hotel was okay no complaints, toast, sausages beans scrambled egg and sometimes bacon. There were different types of cereal and juices, the staff in the restaurant were very pleasant and helpful. Whereas all other staff would pass you in the corridor without as much as a hello! The hotel itself was noisy at night especially on the Thursday when the reception checked in a group of lads next door to us, we were all woken up at midnight by shouting, laughing and screaming which went on until after 2 am in the morning! Such a terrible all round experience.

Do not know what some of the reviewers expected, this hotel is good value for money, the rooms are clean and comfortable the entertainment was very good and the buffet breakfast was excellent.true the hotel could do with a facelift don't judge a book by its cover.

We knew this was a bit out dated but we were still disappointed. The bed was uncomfortable and we could feel the springs. The carpet needed replacing and the lino in the bathroom was badly stained and was so yellow it was brown. The 70s tiles were hideous. The wallpaper was new but outdated. There is Wi Fi but only in the public areas.
However, breakfast was acceptable considering it was buffet style and the public areas were clean and looked after.
The location is fantastic and within easy reach of Woolacombe town centre and the beach.

Room Tip: There is a fantastic view of the sea from the front rooms, but I expect they can be noisy if there is a function on.

I actually liked this place, thought Mad Jack & Lloyd were going to pop up, but anyway, it is a bit tired, and creaky, and cheap. It ahs a swimming pool, snooker table, bar, big tv, showers are ok, view is great

Room Tip: think even numbers 204??
