I travel extensively and stay in Hotels all over the world. The room rates are very expensive The customer service was absolutely horrendous from start to finish; a few of the key interface staff were rude; unwelcoming and actually hostile - as far away from 5 star as you can get

The room did not have adequate space for clothes - we were there for a few days. There was a kinda of a gymn smell about the room due to poor airflow and heat dissipation. On two day the bed were not made properly - thye just fling the duvet over the bed and the duvet was the wrong size and ripped - 5 star?

The final indignity was when we checked out a day early - i had specifically informed them before the 40 hour cut off for cancellation. Howver when i told them this the sullen girl on the desk and the duty manager refused to look upo and siad that would be OK - thye never spoke to us again from that moment. Now this hotel debits your account the minute you check -in - why?

When i checked out they only showed me the bill for the extras like meals. I asked them if they had deducted the one day extra they had billed - you guesssed it they hadnt. They then said they couldt reimburse me - more confrontation from a client who had just spent a lot of money. Eventually they saw sense and credited my account. I informed them that this was the worst value for money I had ver recieved from a hotlel anywhere. They said the GM would phone - he didnt; they dont care at all.
Since they got 5 stars they have rebranded but the Daily Telegraph said that this hotel had notoriouosly bad service - it seems the DNA came through and provide us with a thoroughly forgettable experince

Dear Chris,

Thank you for taking the time to review us on Tripadvisor,

As discussed, I did try and made contact you in separate occasions but was unable to get through to you;

I am sorry once again that we have let you down on this occasion, but I garantee you that the specific members of staff that you have mentioned have been spoken to,

I sincerely hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back one day and show that your feedback is not the norm,

Kind regards
Francisco

visited this hotel for my husbands birthday.

We pulled up ouside the hotel and I saw valet parking. Immediately I thought it was going to be very snobby, how wrong I was.

The hotel is stunning and homely and the grounds are beautiful too. All the staff were friendly without being pretentious.

The bedrooms are large and again very comfortable. We had a room facing the garden which had beautiful views. All the usual toiletries are there, plus a few extras including fresh milk for your hot drinks.

I don’t want to say too much about the food, as I wouldn’t want to spoil the experience. I would just say “to die for”

The whole visit was relaxed and perfect.

I would also like to thank Simon for mending my husbands glasses.

My wife and I enjoyed a three night stay at Bovey Castle. As we drove up to the front of the hotel we received a very friendly and helpful welcome from Simon. He then showed us to our room and provided useful information throughout our stay. Our room (#26) was very nice, with a wonderful view of the valley and some of the golf course. Although the room is large, there are no drawers that could hold anything more than a Gideon bible, leaving a closet with six hangers and no shelves. It was disappointing to have to live out of our suitcases in such a lovely room. We received a strange look when we requested additional hangers so that we could place some more of our clothing in the closet.

Smith's Brasserie, the casual dining room left much to be desired. We dined there our first night because we were still tired from an overnight flight to London and an almost 4 hour drive to Bovey. The hostess was not very nice or welcoming when we appeared for our reserved time. The servers were nice, but poorly trained. We asked three times before we received water. The menu and wine selections were unexciting. It took far too long for our meal to arrive, and when it did, it was not very good. Although we like staying at country house hotels that have a formal and casual dining room, the brasserie doesn't fit well with the building or property. It was strange having our meal and watching a log fire on a TV mounted on the wall. That was pretty lame.

One of the hotel's best features is the chef in the Great Western restaurant. His cooking is outstanding and the surroundings are gracious. We found the service there spotty, with two extremes - terrible and excellent. We were fortunate having Branca and Flo take care of us during two of our dinners. They were excellent and made the wonderful food even better. Other members of the Great Western staff were simply inefficient. At our Sunday lunch, our server was incompetent. While we said nothing about that, the people at the next table were verbal about the service and complained to no avail.

There are some beautiful public rooms, ideal for having a drink or afternoon tea. We liked the bar, with its more than 60 different single malts displayed on one wall. Service there was also spotty, and the upholstery on our chairs contained large holes.

Bovey "could be" exceptional, but not with the flaws we noted. Someone in restaurant management is not properly training staff. Perhaps it is just difficult to find capable or trainable people out there. Having previously stayed at nearby Gidleigh Park, I do not think that is the case. The only consistent sign of training is that each server in both dining rooms appears to have been instructed to walk with one hand behind their back. For most, the training seems to have stopped there.

Room Tip: Go for the valley views, but request a room with drawers or shelves.

Thank you for such a constructive review - clearly we will be discussing your comments and taking action but please do accept my apologies for the short comings. i do hope you mentioned these to the team on the day ?
We are installing shelves into a number of wardrobes as this has bee noted previously. There is a gas fire in Smith's but we do put the ' log fire ' on the tv rather than have a blank screen clearly not to everyone's taste.
We do have the formal dining in the Great Western where you enjoyed so the food and atmosphere in Smith's is meant to be a contrast.
The chairs in the bar are only 2 years old and have a fault in the material - they are being replaced very soon.
Please do return soon , yours was not the norm at Bovey - we can ( and do ) deliver better.
All the best
Greg

On arrival you are greeted by a valet service. The hotel is well kept and friendly without the stuffiness. We stayed in room 14 with amazing views across the valley. Newly furnished spacious bedroom, complimentary gin and Espa products, super comfy deep divan. The ensuite was a wet room nicely decorated. The dressing robes are the softest robes we have ever come across..awesome. Large swimming pool, and nice steam room, the sauna was unfortunately out of action. Gym was well equipped but quite small and cramped. Two restaurants to choose from depending on your budget and dress code, watch out for the rather high service charge added to the bill. Great grounds and lots of activities, located on the moors where you can find highland cattle and other animals grazing in the roads, a real adventure.

Our recent two night stay here with friends was altogether perfect- and even the weather was kind!
We had a top floor room in the main building, which was spacious and quiet, with a good sized bathroom (with bath and walk in shower). Comfortable bed, and a fridge in the room with a minature bottle of fresh milk; a small carafe of sloe gin, fruit, and nuts were also provided.
We ate one evening meal in each restaurant, the more formal Great Western, and Smith's Brasserie. Both meals were very good , and it was nice to have the contrast of styles.
I didn't try the Spa, but the sauna, pool and steam room were lovely. They also have a very well kept croquet lawn.
