Dartmoor, a place of mist, mystery, water and sun. Swallow Barn a place of warmth, space, beautiful views, birds and other wildlife. We had a fabulous week there admiring the countryside and enjoying the peace and quiet. The cottage is wonderfully spacious, well laid out and equipped. We were particularly delighted with the wildlife friendly and eco touches - this is the first cottage we've rented which had onsite composting, such a good idea. There are great walks directly from the cottage, we very much enjoyed a round trip hike that took in the Bearslake Inn, an excellent place for Sunday lunch and the easy walk to Lydford Gorge of course another beautiful spot. Swallow Barn is also well situated as a base to explore the wonders of Dartmoor. Would thoroughly recommend a stay at this lovely place.

Swallow Barn is the most amazing place to stay. The patio windows overlooking The high moors of Dartmoor makes a very scenic view. It has all very modern facilities with fully equipped kitchen and plenty of room for families with little children to enjoy their freedom.
I would definitely go again when the opportunity arises.
Lots of things to do in the nearby area .

“Far From Luxury!”

First impression of the holiday accommodation seemed OK, plenty of room. After we had settled in we noticed that the barn had lots of flies, inside and out. There was some gadget in the kitchen to kill flies but unfortunately it did not work. It was full of dead flies at the back of it.
The barn is adjacent to a cattle shed which was the main factor of the flies, not to mention the smell which was always present. In the end we had to keep the windows shut. The outside chairs and table were very rusty and dirty and obviously had not been stored away in the dry.
We could not use them, but as mentioned earlier would not have been very pleasant sitting outside. The outside area to the side of the barn had lots of building rubbish that had clearly been there for sometime. This would be dangerous for families with children of a certain age.
The BT TV did not work as it should have done and had very limited channels to access. I mentioned this to the housekeeper when we arrived but she said she did not know how to work it. The first basket of logs are free but then they ask £8.00 a basket. We purchased logs at a fraction of the price locally. There was some Drinking Chocolate satchets on the side when we arrived which were dated June 2012! We had booked the barn from the Friday for 11 days leaving on the Monday. On the Friday morning of our first week the housekeeper turned up (we did not know at that time it was her when she was banging on the door as we were not expecting anyone as we were not leaving until the Monday) she proceeded to enter the barn and her first words were "you should have left by now". Clearly there was a misunderstanding between the owner and housekeeper about our holiday dates, not very professional and invaded our privacy.
Very disappointing and will not be returning.

Management Response

Swallow Barn has been under new ownership since 2016 and we would be happy for you to return. There is no building rubbish and new outdoor furniture. There is ample firewood which is included in the cost of the accommodation.
We provide a start up container of fresh teabags and instant coffee and there is also a Nespresso coffee machine at guests’ disposal with recycling bags for the used pods. Nothing is out of date. There appears to have been a miscommunication regarding dates between the previous owners and the previous housekeeper, however our current fantastic housekeeper is fastidious and has received nothing by complimentary reports. As a former employee of the National Park Authority she also has an extensive knowledge of the whole area and can advise guests of places to visit.
The Barn is situated on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park within easy walking distance of the delightful village of Lydford. It is part of a rural farming community which is part of it’s charm. Yes there can be flies which are a nuisance especially when eating but surely this is to be expected anywhere in rural England during summer months.
