“Perfect for a posh walking break”

Like to walk on Dartmoor but don't fancy bunking up in a YMCA at the end of a long day's slog? Saved up a bit of cash for something special? Quite like the idea of a day out on the moors followed by a nice bath and a fab 2-star Michelin meal? Well, you've come to the right place. Gidleigh Park is a lovely arts and crafts country house at the end of a terrifying single-track road (god only know how anyone gets here in winter) with great service, greater food and simply stupendous rooms. And the moors are just outside: you can literally walk straight out onto them. If you can be bothered to venture outside the charming bar, away from the delightful terrace, or outside the lovely 100 or so acres of grounds, of course. We booked the gourmet getaway, which give you the a la carte menu one night and a tasting menu the other, and both were terrific. Service is good, although the staff look terrified of something, and the general manager didn't exactly looked thrilled when we shambled across the threshold. Breakfast isn't the amazing cornucopia you get at Mssr Blanc's Manoir, but is still far from shabby. Rooms are great; ours had a freestanding roll top bath in the window, which we made extensive use of. Occitane toiletries. Attention to detail all round.

This hotel lived up to all expectations except the breakfast was disappointing and ordinary, we stayed for two nights , had a "master room" which was excellent , we had the gourmet get away package which was excellent , the food and service were extremely good, the staff very friendly and welcoming( many hotels of this calibre have rather cold snooty staff).
Having just spent 8 weeks traveling around I have had many hotel breakfasts, ( Gravetye Manor, and the Europa&Regina serving brilliant breakfasts). Often hotels can have off days , this was 2 consecutive days. The bacon was ordinary , the sausages pappy, toast was soggy, fruit salad was boring and lacked flair.
Yes we will go back because of all the other positives .

We spent three wonderful nights here in mid-July. Despite the bad weather keeping us indoors for a lot of the time, we had a perfect, relaxing weekend in our beautiful, very comfortable room overlooking the garden. From tea in bed in the morning, via a lovely light lunch, afternoon tea with chocolate cake to several amazing dinners, we were looked after beautifully from start to finish. All of the staff are charming and helpful and nothing seemed to be spared to make our stay as nice as possible. One of the most truly relaxing hotels I have ever stayed in. Michael Caines is an extremely talented chef and it is worth staying here just for the food!

Room Tip: The rooms facing the garden, while more expensive than others, are worth it.

we stayed for two nights on a very wet weekend in early July which was a shame as this place has much more to offer than Michael Caines cooking - yes the tasting menu was outstanding as was to be expected (the duck in particular) but what made it was the service which excelled (they obviously have a team huddle everyday to make sure everyone knows who's in and their particular foibles - that's good to see)
tried our hand at the Peter Alliss designed 18 hole putting green (some extra lakes due to the rain!) - great as a hangover cure and to bring out your competitive edge! (try beating -3 after 18!)
I'd love to go back in Summer! whenever that may be - save up your pennies,it's most worth it.

Room Tip: stayed in Roos, one of the cheaper rooms - no air conditioning but then again not required!

Undoubtedly a luxurious place to stay, commensurate with the price.

We found the menu a little limited for an extended stay (and would recommend the short walk to the Northmore Arms in Throwleigh for a bit of variation).

While the front of house staff are as charming as one might expect, the waiters and sommeliers might be a bit more cheerful.

Overall another pleasant stay, but I will probably not hurry to return. I had somehow remembered it to be more special.
