“Excellent accomodation for a weeks stay in Brixham”

I have previously reviewed this accommodation and given it a five star rating....I know it was posted as I checked and I have e mail confirmation of it but for some reason it is no longer showing as a review under Curlew One on Trip Advisor or under my account under "Contributions". Luckily I saved it to Word so I will post my review again and hopefully it will be useful to others who are considering booking this accommodation. Technology is great when it works!

This is my original review.

It would be unfair to give this development and Curlew 1 anything less than a five star rating as a base for a holiday. The location is superb if you want to get away from it all and Curlew 1 is brand new. As there haven’t been any previous reviews I will give a detailed one so that people know what to expect. We booked this apartment through Blue Chip Holidays.
As this is a new development our Sat Nav did not recognise the postcode (our sat nav is an old one). So I would advise updating your sat nav before leaving home. However, if you follow the directions Blue Chip holidays send to you then you will find it easily enough. We knew before arrival that building work was still taking place and indeed it was but it didn’t spoil our enjoyment of our holiday and it is nearing completion. There is still a lot of tweaking to be done regarding landscaping etc especially on Tiers 2 and 3 at the time of writing this. Tier 3 is still being constructed. As we were out every day we didn’t find it a problem and all building work had finished by the time we arrived back in the evening.
Car parking is currently a free for all and not allocated but the information left at the apartment suggests that when everything is completed there will be an allocated parking space per apartment. The car park is quite small but we were always able to find a space. There is a one car per apartment rule which given the size of the car park is understandable however if you do need to take 2 cars there is additional parking on the hill down to this complex which was free parking. The car park is about a 5 minute walk from Curlew 1 which is at the far end of the development so something to bear in mind when you need to hump your luggage from the car. You will also need to climb several steps up to this apartment. I would say that if you do have mobility difficulties then maybe this particular apartment wouldn’t be appropriate. We did have a bit of difficulty locating our apartment but luckily the builders on site were able to help us out. By the time we left the buildings on Tier 2 had been named and numbered so it should be easier now. There is also a small swimming pool on the complex.
I don’t know if anyone has stayed in Curlew 1 before us but it was immaculate, spotlessly clean and some lovely touches like really good quality kettle and toaster and a bottle of wine and tea/coffee/milk on arrival. All the kitchen items were spotless and it was very well equipped including tea towels, washing up liquid and other cleaning items. There is a built in fridge with an ice compartment (but no freezer which is something to bear in mind). There is a combi washing machine/dryer and a dishwasher (we didn’t use either so can’t comment on how they work). The apartment is more compact than the picture on Blue Chip Holidays suggests and the bedrooms are small. All the beds were made up and it all smelt really nice and clean and fresh. Good quality bedding and very comfortable beds but the double bedroom was very tight space wise with little room to manoeuvre and the wardrobe storage in both bedrooms quite small but adequate for a weeks stay. Towels and soap were left for our use. There is an excellent flat screen TV on the wall in the living room and both bedrooms have flat screen TV’s fixed to the bedroom walls. The apartment has Wi Fi which works very well. The password for the Wi Fi is included in the information left for you at the apartment. As a plus there is also a good EE and O2 mobile signal here (I can’t comment on any other network mobile service).
Curlew 1 is on the lower level of the second tier and therefore does not have a sea view from the terrace/balcony. It is not raised enough above the building in front for a sea view so unfortunately the Terrace/Balcony looks into the apartment in front. It does however have a sunny aspect for the first half of the day and there is excellent patio furniture to sit out on. I think it would benefit from some kind of screening from the apartment in front from a privacy point of view. On the plus side Curlew 1 does have a patio area to the side of the apartment which does have a sea view but unfortunately due to its location doesn’t get much sun later in the day. I think that maybe a bit more could be made of this patio area at the side to enjoy the sea views…it may be that this is work in progress as this area did look like it wasn’t completely finished.
I would think that the apartment above us (Curlew 2) does have a sea view as it is higher up and looks over the apartments in front. From everything we have observed the apartments at ground level on Tier 2 will have a hit and miss sea view depending on their location. You may fair better with a sea view if you are on the first floor level of tier 2. I would imagine the same will apply to Tier 3 when finished. However the apartments on Tier 1 (Advocet, Osprey, Puffin, Sandpiper, Lapwing) have superb views on both floor levels so if a sea view is important to you then those are definitely the ones to go for. Having posted the negative I have to say in all fairness that apart from the fact the bedrooms are very tight for space and the balcony doesn’t have a sea view, it really is an excellent base for exploring the area and we had a very comfortable stay here and would definitely return. As a holiday let it is very comfortable accommodation for a week away from it all.
This really is a place to get away from it all. You will need your car to get to a supermarket and it would be wise to stock up. There is a large Sainsbury’s and a smaller Asda a 15 minute drive away and a Tesco Express and Co op in Brixham itself. Nearer to the apartment and within walking distance “The Brixham Holiday Park” which adjoins the car park is open to Non Residents and has a very small shop where you can buy newspapers and bread and other bits and pieces but it is not very big. You can also eat in their restaurant/bar. We didn’t have an evening meal there but we did have breakfast which was very nice. The area is a walker’s paradise and very dog friendly with many trails leading from The Cove. Brixham is a 20 minutes’ walk away. It is a downhill walk into Brixham but a bit of a hike back up again. After a bit of trial and error I would recommend not taking the main road down into Brixham (Overgang Road) but when you get to Overgang Road walk straight on and follow the back streets…..it is a much safer and a much easier walk albeit there will be some steps to negotiate.
We ate at the New Quay Inn Brixham……A 3 course Sunday Lunch was excellent at £17.00 per head. We also ate at “Number 15” on the harbour front. A very old building and the restaurant is small and cosy. Again we had an excellent meal there. All in all an excellent chill out week away from it all.
