Review of Stoned

Stoned
Ranked #14 of 45 Restaurants in Braunton
Certificate of Excellence
Price range: US$ 9 - US$ 24
Description: We're a coffee shop by day and a pizza place by night with daytime pizza during the holidays too. Since we started in 2013, Stoned has spread the pizza love as one pop-up restaurant became two, then three and now we also have our very own shop / kitchen / restaurant / take-out place in Braunton. But even though we’ve grown, one thing has stayed the same ... our commitment to create delicious wood fired food by combining the best ingredients we can find with creativity and care. Our flour is organic stoneground flour from Dorset, plum tomatoes are from Italy, cave-aged Tuscan salami and free range chicken from Devon. Our team is hand-picked, home-schooled too, making sure you get the best experience ever. We take the same care our drinks ... our coffee is organic and fair-trade to make sure you get the best brew and at the same time helping others and the environment. The same applies to our range of leaf teas and hot chocolate, both carefully selected and prepared. And then there's our cakes! Melissa our baker makes an ever changing range of cakes - all very delicious. Artisan bread is available on a Saturday. And just to let you know, you can order online and then collect; you can book a table provided it it's 4 hours before you're due to arrive, or just pop down and we'll make your pizza or find you a table as soon as we can.

We booked for 7 since the previous evening the place was very full. However when we went for an evening at 6.30pm, there were plenty of empty tables. The staff were very young and pleasant and coped with the orders and drinks reasonably well. The 7 pizzas ordered turned up quite quick, and I would say they were not cooked enough and not very exciting. I did not realise the chili I ordered was in fact on a pizza, the mince layed on top was not spicy, and in fact you had difficulty finding any chili.
This place will not attract non pizza people unless they up their game.

Hi Bob, yes you're right, there's only pizza on the menu here at Stoned. We've decided to do one thing and do it well rather than try to offer too many things. So the ground chilli beef you chose is a pizza topping. The menu does say "Pizza Menu" at the top, but I guess you must have missed that. We cook ground Devon beef with onions, tomato, tobasco sauce and fresh chillies - you should be able to see red chilli in there. We aim to make it medium heat and then if anyone wants it hotter they can add our habaneros chilli oil which has a massive blast and this should have been offered to you. I can't understand why they weren't cooked enough as we aim for a crispy base with slight charring for a smokey flavour.

The reason there may have been empty tables when you arrived is they are for a later booking without the time to allow other guests to eat before their arrival. We try to avoid squeezing people in or rushing them.

I hope that explains everything. Thanks for the feedback. Regards, Tom

To begin with the delivery service was unavailable, as was the website (no takeaway phone order facility) so we walked around. Staff lovely and friendly. Having been really impressed with the new menu vegan options we started to order them, only to be told they weren’t yet available. So we ordered the ‘garlic and lime marinated king prawns’ - which looked like ordinary prawns and tasted neither of garlic or lime! The side salad was listed as including giant cous cous, pumpkin seeds and a zingy dressing - none of these ingredients were included! We also ordered two garlic breads, one came over cooked to a crisp, the other doughy and soggy. Not impressed!

We're really sorry to hear about your disappointment Colin. I'd just like to explain the circumstances around a few of those issues. Unfortunately, we had a problem with our vegan/dairy-free ingredient supplier over the Easter period and so these pizzas weren't available. We had updated the restaurant menu to reflect this, but I think you must have been looking at the online or newspaper menu. These are now back in stock and we are offering the full range of vegan/dairy-free pizzas.

Regarding deliveries, I'm afraid we've had to suspend this service, because there hasn't been the demand; we have had numerous evenings where our driver was available, but nobody ordered. I'm quite baffled by this, as in most other towns/cities in the UK there is Deliveroo rider cutting you up at every turn! We don't take orders over the phone, because our online system is quicker and more secure for you as a customer.

I'll look into the garlic and lime prawns, because they should have a good kick of both of those ingredients, not least, it should have been served with half of a fresh lime for you to squeeze over. The garlic breads are a bit of a mystery, but I will speak to the cook, Rufus, who was on that night and has been cooking for a couple of years now, but I can understand if this was 'the straw that broke the camel's back' in your experience.

The team in the shop are grateful for your kind words and also for the reasonable way that you were on the evening, but I wish you had let us know your disappointment there and then so that we could perhaps have done something to put it right. If you could e-mail me at hello@stoned.org.uk I'll work out how we can make it up to you and perhaps move your rating up from a one-star, which hurts a lot - we really care about giving good service and making sure people enjoy their experience with us.

I hope to hear from you.

We went to Stoned and unfortunately the pizza was off the menu but for lunch we had delicious soup (lentil and butternut squash) and really good coffee and cakes (sticky ginger and chocolate tiffin) to die for. Tables and chairs are high up bar style but a clip on high chair was provided for our little boy. The server was lovely and friendly. We think we'll go back for pizza.

Delicious pizzas. Unusual combinations. Steak and mushrooms was outstanding. Margarita tasty. Light and thin traditional pizza base.

We found the décor slightly sterile, the vegan pizza was fine and plenty on the plate.
Good Coffee.
Nice and warm on a very cold January day.
Customers in and out, but not massively busy re. (as above) the time of year.
Pleasant staff.
