“Nice stay close to a fabulous beach”
Reviewed 24 August 2016 for a stay in August 2016

We stayed here with my sister and her 5 year old for a first ever UK seaside holiday. We were looking for a specific area, beach and above all a place to stay with enough space for all of us, and Ferrycombe did not disappoint in this regard.

The layout is unusual at first because bedrooms are downstairs, but this makes perfect sense when you consider you spend most of your waking time (when not on the beach) in the living space...and that's where you want to enjoy the sea views.

The house is extremely well equipped - we could have had an army stay over and still would have had enough cutlery and crockery to go round! - and pretty much everything a regular family who cooks daily (as we do) is provided. Useful utility room (though we did not need to use this as we had great weather) and the wifi, though slow, works well so we didn't miss out on watching the key Olympic moments on TV / iPhones etc.

It is also handy to have 2 bathrooms for when you all get back from the beach and need to wash up. My sister had the room with the ensuite, only because it turned out to have twin beds in it (whereas we thought it would have the double bed) and found the shower not to be as powerful as the main family bathroom. The bathrooms were both very clean and tidy and it was thoughtful to have left us hand towels and hand wash - especially as we didn't think to bring those!

There was a bit of a damp odour downstairs which we couldn't quite figure out as there were no signs of dampness, but we slept well - again, the bedrooms were well arranged and laid out. The only other niggle to add is that, in the room that currently has the double bed, I couldn't find a plug socket close enough to a mirror to dry my hair. However, we brought an extension cord with us which I used in the end.

Bigbury beach is amazing. Fantastic for everyone - and very safe for our nephew, with interesting rock pools, caves and other features that delighted us all. When you are bored with the beach, there is always Burgh Island to explore, or the sea tractor (at high tide).

One thing I would stress - if you are not very mobile, or have young children, you might want to budget for parking (currently £6.50/day) down by the beach instead of walking down - and then walking back UP! - the (very) steep hill. Regardless of your fitness level, when you are carrying lots of things and dragging a 5 year old, it's quite a challenge. We drove down and parked for the day, which was fine and the Venus cafe does excellent food and drink.
