“Not the best in Kinvara - but if nothing else is open...”

We ate here on our first night of 4 in Kinvarra. We were disappointed that the restaurant wasn't open as it was reserved for a tour group and were referred the bar. The bar is nice enough. The young staff appear to be hard working. The food offering were typical Irish bar menu options and the cod and chips was certainly not the best around. We chose to eat elsewhere all our other nights in the village and we also noted that the restaurant was closed every night for a tour group.

Some training is required for the bar staff...I patiently waited in front of three of them as I was trying to pay but washing the glasses and various other tasks appeared to be more important than serving the customer. That was touch disappointing. I would say that if you are looking for a later meal then this will be open when others might not.

We had a lovely dinner. The bar was full because of a match between Galway and County Clare so we sat in the restaurant. Our waiter was the owner who was very friendly. Her recommended the chowder and it was wonderful ! My husband had the lamb koftas and he was equally impressed.

We had some drinks at the bar watching the World Cup game Belgium-France. Unfortunately we lost, but we had a nice evening. Service was good and the food was sell, prepared. Good ambiance too!

This is an excellent hotel / bar where the best of fod is served. I think it was the best seafood chowder I have ever had. The Chefs both doing the early morning breakfast and evening meals have to be complemented they are a credit to the hotel as are all of the staff. As for the bar staff two stand out Grainne and Donna these have great business heads and are determined to work in the best interest of the hotel. Unfortunately there are two issues here the first being that, the owners do not appear to be involved in the font of the house what a pity and secondly for a village like Kinvarra their pricing is all wrong. The day for saying that the hotel should be charging more is well gone bearing in mind the reduced Vat rate for food and accomodation. The bar prices are out of line with the other pubs in the village which makes no sense at all and this could be a major issue for the winter. The rooms are totally over priced and again need to be addressed bearing in mind that maximum occupancy should be attainable all year round, this is where with owner involvement such ssues would not arise. The main bar staff need to be more engaging and friendlier towards the tourists. The more pleasant the staff are the more the customer will be inclined to stay and avail of the facilities. There are some great local characters around the counter which would make one feel very welcome. Perhaps these should be looked after.

Driving from Doolin to Cleggan in Connemara, we passed through this charming town and couldn't resist stopping at the traditional looking pub at the Merriman Hotel. It was the perfect spontaneous lunch stop - great fish and chips and BLT, all the caffeine we needed to push on. The setting is particularly welcoming. The pub transitions into the very nice hotel with a great reading room to relax in for a moment between the two.
