How lucky we were to land at Mary and Hugh's Avalon B & B.
My son and I were welcomed with tea and Mary's (to die for) homemade brown bread and butter. We relaxed in the cheery living room and shared heartfelt conversation with our hosts.
We had traveled from the US to Glenties in search of our "roots". Family lore had it that my great grandfather Patrick and his sister Bridget had left this glen during the famine for a new life in America. Mary and Hugh know this town and everyone in it and introduced us to a relative who had recently organized a family reunion and had published her findings in a book which she shared with us.
In addition to that introduction, Hugh drove us to the hidden family cemetery and the spiritual well, where the family would have said the rosary praying for a safe journey for Patrick and Bridget. It goes without saying Hugh and Mary made our trip unforgettable.
We had the family room which was well equiped and had a pastoral view with wooly lambs grazing outside of our window!
Breakfast was yummy with scrambled eggs and salmon shared in the light filled breakfast room with the other delightful guests.
