“Very interesting tour”
Reviewed 1 May 2012 via mobile

We were staying in Kiawah Island and decided to take a day trip to the Charleston Tea Co., a family owned business.
We found the tour very educational and thought-provoking. We saw the acres of tea plants, a new high tech greenhouse, a unique tea harvesting tractor and the tea processing center that was inactive at this time of the year. We were amazed to learn there were more employees in the gift shop than the 3 workers in the acres of fields, maintaining all the tea plants. I also couldn't understand why after the tea is processed in SC, it is shipped to CT for packaging and then shipped back to SC for distribution. In response to my question, the picture got clearer after learning that CTC is now a subsidary of Bigelow Tea that owns the packaging plant in CT.
CTC is higher priced and sold in select shops.

“What a delightful day !”

a bit off the beaten path but so worth the trip !!! This was by far my favorite !!! Do the trolley ride and see the greenhouse and fields of tea growing. Being a tea drinker this was so interesting to learn about how they make green and black tea. I just loved our time here and purchased not just tea but the nicest hand cream who knew !!

“Interesting and educational”
Reviewed 26 April 2012

The Charleston Tea Plantation is the only tea plantation in the US. The factory tour is free, but the trolley tour through the plantation is $10 for adults ($8 with AAA, AARP, coupons) and well worth it. We learned a lot about how tea is grown, harvested, and packaged. It doesn't sound that interesting as I write this, but it was. Free samples of all you care to drink tea (hot or cold) in the excellent gift shop.
