Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: Experience living history, including the African American story, at our 775-acre Revolutionary War site. Explore the Bratton Plantation, owned and lived on by three Bratton generations. Historic Brattonsville presents the history of the Scots-Irish and African-Americans in the South Carolina upcountry largely through preserving and interpreting the story of the Bratton community. With 30 historic structures from the 1760s to the late 19th century, we provide visitors with an opportunity to see the evolution of Southern culture and architecture in the Carolina Piedmont. Learn how people farmed the land, cooked their food and entertained themselves in the 18th and 19th centuries at this 778-acre living history museum. Historical farming techniques and day-to-day activities are presented by costumed interpreters year-round. Come explore the Huck’s Defeat Battlefield Trail and video documentary that bring to life one of the most important Revolutionary War battles in the Carolinas.

Come with time, bring your camera. the ladies in the houses are very kind. the people preparing the pork in the fields aren't very friendly and only talk to white people.....sounds racist but its true. they need to understand foreigners come to visit their location to learn, so if someone looks different welcome them with an open smile...don't only welcome southern white folks....be open minded....

We are history lovers for sure, so having this place open to the public is something we cherish. This is a great place to go back in time and see what it was really like. The structures are just like they were hundreds of years ago but the best part is the enterpreters that work there and dress the part. I love going to the gift shop and buying chatting too.
We were so disappointed to see that local government officials seem to be trying to be me "Politically Correct" and pushing that off on this place. Hey, let History be History, we really should not be trying to make it fit current views. Brattonsville staff hang in there and Thanks for keeping it real for everyone! I hope we all make a stand as voters this year and help get those in local politics out by voting!
Great times and history is shared and is how we learn the good and bad which is how we all move forward!

LOVE this place. I go all the time to wander the historic buildings and just enjoy the peace of nature. Until this year they held an annual Civil War re-creation. Unfortunately, due to concerns of possible conflicts with those who chose to ignore that part of our country's history, I'm not sure they'll have it again. Please go and learn something from just wandering and enjoy the quiet beautiful countryside.

With buildings from two different centuries and eras, there is a lot of history on this site. We like being able to wander at will, and there's plenty of room for kids to run around on the grass. The movie is very helpful.

This site offers a lot of historic buildings to tour and an historic battleground. We walked the relatively easy 1/2 mile trail to the Revolutionary War battleground site which has historic markers and a representative structure of the original home at the site. The other buildings are set in two areas, one for 18th century buidlings and the other for 19th century buildings. The variety ran from an old tavern/school building, to slave quarters, farm buildings and the main house. Staff are in various buildings performing period jobs. The main house is self-guided and furnished in period furniture.

Hey Ken,
Thanks for taking the time to write a nice review. We are glad that you enjoyed our site. Come join us at one of our monthly events and meet even more costumed interpreters. At "By the Sweat of Our Brows" you can meet actual Bratton slave descendants and hear their family stories.
