You can’t beat the view and it’s close to all the action and restaurants on the island. Tides is modern, updated, clean, and has great service. We’ve stayed here at least five times and have never had a bad experience. We even brought our German Shepherd with us in the spring. Tides is pet friendly and so are most of the businesses on the island. Highly recommend!

We try to visit every year and the Tides is always the place we like to stay. You cannot beat the combo of the location, price and staff. The rooms are clean and the staff is friendly. Great access to the beach. Dog friendly as well. Only downside is the gym is tiny. Highly recommend!

We have stayed at this motel several times before, but our stays were not in “season.” The rates were generally around $125.00, for an oceanfront room (which is appropriate based on the age and facilities of this motel). This year we needed to come to Charleston in July, and we expected a rate increase but were shocked to find our two-night stay would set us back $731.88 (Saturday night was $388.74 and Sunday we paid $343.14). This exterior corridor motel is very old and was originally built as a Holiday Inn in the 60’s.
Upon entering our room, we were overcome by the smell of a baby powder fragrance. We had observed a bellman in the lobby spraying vents in the ceiling and we assumed it was used to cover the smell of mildew. The in-room refrigerator didn’t appear to be cooling, had a long black hair in it, and it was leaking muddy water into the cabinet where it resided. The floor was covered in sand, and the room was just dirty. Canvas artwork had visible dirt and the walls had food stains where patrons had missed the trash cans. I was disappointed to learn there are no in-room safes as well.
We decided to take advantage of the beach outside our hotel (which is public) and found the beach jam packed with little room for our chairs. We moved several times due to the abundance of smokers, and finally decided perhaps the motel pool might be less crowded. In the past, there have been an employee who worked the pool area and handed out towels. There were no employees at the pool, and we were told to go to the front desk and request them. We’ve enjoyed in the past the cushioned round chairs for two and my husband and I went to sit on one. Very visible mold and mildew covered every cushion on both sides of all the cushioned seating. We settled on chaise loungers.
The pool was full of people. We met a couple very soon after entering who shared they are “locals” and that many of the people there were not guests of the motel. They claimed the management knew of their local status and had no problem with their using the facilities. The outdoor bar adjacent to the pool was so crowded (again with locals) that a seat was not available. Smoking was again an issue so we stayed away from the area.
That evening we decided to enjoy room service and we ordered scallops and tuna. The portions were tiny, (2 scallops and five pieces of tuna) and with the $3 delivery fee AND 18% gratuity (added automatically) we paid $44.44. Although the food was good, we felt it was overpriced.
My husband loves the breakfast buffet, so we decided we’d have it on Monday before checking out. Unfortunately, we learned they only run the buffet on Saturday’s and Sundays even during their high season. We would have appreciated being advised at check-in so we could have arranged our schedule.
We have stayed in many 4 star hotels (both inside and outside the United States) for far less than we paid to stay here. We will not be back.

Room Tip: Don't waste your money here.

This was our first time being to Folly Beach and staying at the Tides. Absolutely fell in love with the whole place. Rooms were very nice and clean, not to mention spacious. The food at the restaurant located at the motel was 10/10. The drinks were 15/10 the Folly Vice is to DIE for! So so good. Overall experience 10/10. Will definitely be back. The staff was all exceptionally friendly and very helpful, they offered to take my luggage cart up to my room. The view from the room goes on forever and is magnificent.

My husband and I stayed for a weekend and everything was nice except when you come off the beach and need to rinse the sand of your feet there is only 1 faucet and has no pressure plus there is a sink that says wash shells here, but it doesn't work. Employee's told me they turned it off. Makes it very difficult to not bring a ton of sand in your room /bed. Gross
