We spent 4 nights at the Market Pavillion hotel. Service issues keep this hotel from being 5 star. Below are the pros and cons.
Great location within walking distance to anywhere you would want to go in downtown Charleston.
Rooms are large, quiet and comfortable with Hermes toiletries.
Rooftop pool and bar and restaurant with great city/water views.
Good food at Pavilion restaurant. Tuna tartar tower was awesome.
Continental breakfast is set out on each floor every morning between 7-10.
Great homemade treats at turndown service. Each night chocolate chip cookies, pralines etc.
We had originally booked the hotel for Thursday-Sunday at $469/night. We later added Sunday night at $329 for that additional night. When we checked in they did not have a record of that. After 3 visits to the front desk we finally got it straightened out. Or we thought we did. Night before we had to revisit the issue.. if you book demand an email confirm. ( we did at original booking as well as when we added a night- but never received one. Shame on us for not following up)
The pool temperature is freezing cold.
It is hard to get a towel at the pool. Both days it took two requests for towels and over 15 minutes both days. Bring a towel from your room. Less hassle.
The maid service does not include replenishing the toiletries. I used the shower cap the first day and threw it out. We ran out of shower gel and shampoo. Finally Sunday morning ( 4th day) I saw a maid in the hall and asked her for more stuff. Given the room rates it seems rather pathetic to skimp on shampoo and shower caps.
On Sunday we were sitting by the pool and decided we wanted to have dinner at the Pavilion ( rooftop) restaurant. I asked the bartender for a reservation for 4 people that night. He told me I had to call guest services. Really? Whatever. I called the main number and it rang about 15 times. The guy answers and says " can I place you on a brief hold?" I said "no transfer me to guest services". Of course he puts me on hold. If you are going to put me on hold anyway then just answer the phone " hold please". Anyway....eventually he answers the phone and I tell him I want a reservation for 4 for dinner at the Pavilion restaurant . To which he answers " tables are first come first serve". So now i am incredibly aggravated. First I cant get a towel...and then this jerk tells me to call the front desk for reservations that don't exist. So I ask Mr. Front Desk Clerk why the bartender told me to call guest services for a reservation if they dont take reservations. To which Mr. FDC tells me the only reservations the bartender is allowed to make is for private parties and table rental is $500 per table. Really? Do you think I care about that? Really? Maybe Mr. FDC should apologize and tell me bartender is new and thank me for letting him know and that he will inform bartender for future reference. Frankly anything is better than Mr. FDC informing me of party rental fees.
