Tucked away in a neighborhood a few blocks off trendy Upper King Street is a little gem of a restaurant that just opened called Eastside Bagel. They serve large steamed bagel sandwiches for breakfast, lunch and afternoon snacks. I had never had one, but now I can tell you that they are absolutely delicious! My husband had the “Traditional,” a scrumptious egg and bacon on an everything bagel with cheese and cream cheese, softly steamed into a mouthwatering, oozy breakfast. I had the Sargeant Pepper, a salami, cream cheese and sweet pepper jelly concoction. Yum!
We loved these so much that we brought six more sandwiches home with us, cut them into sixes, stuck them with toothpicks and used them as hors d’oeuvres at a party that night. (We re-steamed them by boiling water in a container in our microwave, the turning off the power and putting the sandwich plate in to sit for a few minutes. It worked!)
This place is tiny — playhouse-sized, and there are only two tiny outside tables. So take-out may be the way to go — head to a park for a picnic. Also, be prepared to wait. Each sandwich is prepared to order. Worth the wait though! They are open 7 am - 5 pm.
Hoping that Eastside Bagel comes to our neighborhood soon.
