My 4 friends and I stayed in the "kitchen house" this past weekend and LOVED the place. If you are looking for white walls, tailored bedskirts and all the fufu trimmings of a Charleston hotel, this is not for you. The house is centuries old, has a squeaky board in the floor here and there, a small bathroom and no tvs in the bedrooms. PERFECT Charleston charm! The owners are super nice and accommodating. They live in the house in front of the two houses used for short term rentals, so they are nearby if needed. Plenty of clean linens provided, as well as a cot. The fridge had milk, OJ, English muffins, waffles, a coffee cake and champagne, The property is close enough to walk downtown or to Battery waterfront. I plan to book this place again in the spring!

In one of the most quit streets stand two small buildings behind a big, century old family house. In one of these we lived for five days. The fridge was well stocked, the bedroom clean and comfortable. The shower acceptable. The city is only a footstep away. The host and hostess are very friendly and have a centuries old connection with the city itself. In fact, the are direct descenders of verious famous Middeltons, including Arthur Middleton. One of the daughters guided us through the inner city and disclosed some special places that not only had historic significance, but also personal memories for the family.

My husband and I stayed in the one bedroom Carriage House and we were very disappointed. Upon arrival we were greeted by Mr. Middleton and he walked us inside. We knew before we made the reservations that this was not your typical set down to breakfast BB, but under the impression they would stock the small refrigerator with breakfast items. He proceeded to tell us that they no longer stock food, only provided milk and OJ. Not sure how they promote themselves as a B&B without providing food for their guests. We noticed an old piece of toast still in the toaster and crumbs on top of it. The front door was problematic to unlock and we even had to get their help to unlock it at one point. The flowers around Charleston were beautiful this time of year, but their courtyard was unkempt and pots of dead flowers sitting around. I will say the bedroom upstairs was okay, with a king size bed that was comfortable and clean. One of the towels in the bathroom was ratty and worn, although the others were fine. You have to use the outside stairs to get luggage upstairs because the stairs on the inside are very steep, narrow and curvy. One positive was the location, which was good walking distance to everything. I think the owners take care pride in the fact that this has been in their family all these years (as they should), but it is no excuse to not pamper their guests that pay good money to stay there. We definitely will not stay here again.

We are so sorry to hear of your unpleasant experience with us. This property has been run as a bed and breakfast for somewhere close to 30 years now by the Middleton Family. The building in which you stayed dates back to the 1740s. This property is certainly not for everyone. The stairs on the outside of the property were recently rebuilt to have safer access to the second floor. The door however is in the process of being fixed. Our central location and quirky charm are the biggest assets for some of our guests. Again, we are sorry to hear that our home was not right for you, and I hope the charm of our old city was not lost after your unmet expectations.

We stayed in the one bedroom kitchen house which very much exceeded my expectations.

Positives:
Location is fantastic - we walked everywhere in downtown charleston from here.
AC is super powerful!! I loved it
Bathroom is spacious
True California King Bed
Kitchen and living room space is lovely
Very soft towels
Great outdoor patio area with a fountain for reading

Less great:
It is small. We didnt need a giant room though as we were out exploring the city
It doesnt have all the posh amenities of fancy hotel

Nonetheless, it was charming and we had a great time!

We decided to settle on a home instead of paying for an expensive hotel in downtown Charleston. We found this site on vrbo.com. With so many homes to choose from, my sister-in-law told us this was one of the best locations in downtown Charleston. Located right on Church St, 1 block from E. Bay St. Located near the battery, Waterfront Park and Rainbow Row.

The main home offers this home, a 2/1-1/2, and another home, a 1/1 on the same property for rent. The homes are older, from the late 1700's, early 1800's I'd say. Some definite updates over the years provide you with a full /bath shower unit, full working kitchen, and an additional 1/2 bath downstairs with laundry. 1 bedroom upstairs has a king, the other bedroom has 2 twins. Much more cozy coming home after a long day to our cottage, rather than a cold hotel room with a bed and 2 chairs. Cable TV available in the cottage. Located in the historic district, there are many homes in the area that are open for viewing. We ran every morning. Easy maneuvering, beautiful scenery, and very flat. Although, sidewalks can be crumbly.

Judy, the owner, can take payment over the phone. Her daughter also gives walking tours of Charleston.
