Owner description: The Aiken-Rhett House Museum, 48 Elizabeth Street, c. 1820, Is unique in many ways. For example, it remained in the hands of family descendents for 142 years until it was sold to The Charleston Museum and opened as a museum house in 1975. Historic Charleston Foundation purchased the house in 1995 and adopted a conservation approach to the interpretation of this important house and its outbuildings.

Good example of urban plantation. Showed how rich and slaves lived in the city. Headsets allow you to learn about the people who lived there and the house itself. Worth doing.

Great self guided audio tour of this historic, un-restored Charleston home. Truly a fascinating look into the past.

I loved that fact that this house was conserved, not restored or rebuilt etc.
I also liked the audio tour; you could listen to what you wanted to and skip over things if you weren't interested. You weren't a "captive audience."

Well worth the cost. A window to an earlier time with a lot of the artifacts in place. We went with teenagers and a young boy and all found it interesting.
