“Lovely Old Hotel in Charleston”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 April 2012

A friend and I spent a few days in Charleston on our way to Hilton Head. We found The Francis Marion Hotel and Spa to be a lovely older hotel. It is directly across from Marion Square, which is a very convenient location for sightseeing in Charleston. Parking can be a problem in downtown Charleston, so the valet parking was a plus. The free “hop on, hop off” bus stops on the corner across the street from the hotel. When you step into the hotel lobby it is like stepping back in time to the days of the Grand Old South. It contains several comfortable seating areas, a bar, a grand piano and beautiful chandeliers. Considering its’ age, the hotel is in good condition. Some items are showing a little age. Our room was rather small, but the bed was extremely comfortable. The room décor was standard. We had a wonderful view of the city and the harbor from our 11th floor room. The bathroom is very small compared to today’s standards; however, you have to remember they didn’t have large bathrooms during the time period the hotel was built. The service was excellent and the staff extremely helpful. The hotel offers a safety deposit box service to their quest free of charge. Their restaurant has a relaxed “nice-casual” atmosphere, full bar service and piano entertainment on selected nights. We enjoyed wonderful meals there, selected from their varied menu. I highly recommend the she crab soup.

Great location in historic, beautiful Charleston! King Street & one block from University of SC. Room was clean & view was of roof tops and parking ramp & a beautiful church. BUT the concierge was outstanding. She knew her history and suggested some great finds. Recommend Magnolia's, Justines, water taxi to Patriots Point and take the trolley! We cruised with Carnival out of Charleston's port right past Fort Sumpter. Beautiful vacation!!

We had an amazing experience staying in a beautiful suite overlooking downtown Charleston at the Francis Marion. The rooms were elegant and the staff was punctual and helpful with every request. The location is perfect as well. We walked outside Saturday morning to find the Charleston Farmer's Market just across the street. We will be back.

This hotel is older but situated in a great location. About 6 blocks from the Auditorium and about 10 blocks from the Market, everything within walking distance. Access back to I-26 is great. The rooms are a bit on the small side and the bathrooms somewhat dated, but I feel the exceptional attitude of the staff and the location more than make up for this. We overlooked the park which put our room on the King Street side, a little noisy, but nothing that kept us up. We were there for a family event, so we had rooms on the 5th and 8th floor. Both floors were clean and well maintained.

Room Tip: Some rooms come with 2 bathrooms. If that makes life easier ask if one is available.

We stay at the Francis Marion hotel for a week, our room was big enough, but the bathroom had clunks of soap on the walls when we got there and was never clean, the cleaning cru need to be uptaded along with the rooms, lobby is nice, people at the carpet and the concierge were very nice, the location ideal, but overall no worth their prices.
