There is an emanation from the heart in genuine hospitality which cannot be described, but is immediately felt and puts the stranger at once at his ease. ~Washington Irving

A stay with Jan and Bruce at the lovely Artist's Inn and Gallery is much more than a welcome respite from everyday life--it feels like visiting with old friends. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by both Jan and Bruce and shown the ropes--plenty of common gathering space, quiet nooks and crannies inside and out, and the ever-stocked cookie jar (with to-die-for chocolate chip raspberry cookies!). In our many travels, we have never felt so "at home." It is quite evident that the Inn is more than a living for the Garrabrandts--it is a large part of their life. Their personalities and passions are evident in everything from the decor to the artfully inspired breakfasts. It is a rare gift to be able to welcome strangers to your door with such grace and charm. Although we could easily compose a dissertation on the virtues of Jan and Bruce and The Artist's Inn, we have tried to capture our stay as follows:

Location:
The Artist's Inn is perfectly located. We tend to like to get off the beaten path when we travel. Quiet little towns with local restaurants and "hidden treasures" are our "thing." Terre Hill provides the best of both worlds--easy access to the more trodden path of the Amish tourist stops/shops (about 15 minutes away)...but the wonderful feeling of escaping the tour crowds and hustle-bustle at the end of the day. The Inn is also located within only a few minutes drive of some amazing greenhouses--ask Jan for a list as she will happily share!

The Inn:
Top to bottom, the Inn is the perfect place to unwind at the end of the day--and to start the day, for that matter! The gardens and porch provide a sense of calm and peace that we all-too-often miss in our everyday lives. If there hadn't been so much to see and do, we could have happily sat on the porch, sipped tea, and munched some delectable goodies and whiled away the day. Lovingly decorated with Bruce's art, antiques, and other family treasures and mementos, the Inn feels like a HOME away from home. Christmas enthusiasts, we stayed in the Kriss Kringle room and spent time wrapped in a sense of holiday spirit as we browsed the antiques, books, and "little touches" that adorn the room. Big believers in the jolly man in red, we love the Dickens quote that is painted on the wall that serves as a reminder to "keep Christmas in our hearts all the year through."

The Art Gallery:
We first encountered Bruce and his quirky art on a blistering hot day at the People's Choice Festival in Boalsburg, Pennsylvania. Since then, we have purchased a number of his books and prints and--without fail--they always generate a laugh whether displayed in our own home or given as much-loved gifts. Treat yourself to some time browsing through Bruce's art in his gallery (part of the Inn). It is the sure cure for what ails you. Puns abound and it is extra-special to have a chance for Bruce to share some of his inspiration, as well. Aside from his art, Bruce has perhaps the very best outlook on life that we have ever encountered.

Breakfast!
If, like us, you are "grab a yogurt and run" breakfast eaters, plan to be AMAZED. Jan is a phenomenal cook and breakfast is taken to a new level (art form, perhaps!). From the homemade scones, fresh fruit, and delectable "main" to the dessert (yes! dessert for breakfast--how cool is that!?), it is a real treat. Served in the dining room, it is a chance to chat with fellow guests (between mouth fulls and satisfied "oohs" and "ahhs") as well as Jan and Bruce. Plenty of coffee, juice, and conversation abound. We especially like the fact that Jan purchases local produce and meats--adding to the sense of a community that looks after itself and takes care of one another.

If you seek to escape the "everyday," plan a weekend--or more--at The Artist's Inn. No doubt, you will leave feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and feeling as if you have made some new friends in Bruce and Jan.

Happy Travels!

We had an overnight stay at this lovely Inn. We arrived and left with beautiful church bells tolling. Bruce and Jan are enthusiastic host's, taking excellent care of all your needs. Rooms are spotless and very comfortable. Breakfast was a delicious feast, with loving attention to detail. (I loved the baked squash.) If you want a quiet country break, this is the Inn for you. Our purpose to the area was the Sight and Sound theatre, which was about 40 min. away on a beautiful country drive. Would have loved a longer stay to get lost in the beautiful countryside. Hope to return in future.

Room Tip: I like a king size bed.

Thanks so much for writing - we loved your group. Here's how you do the maple-acorn squash. Cut squash in half and clean out the seeds. Place cut side down in baking dish - add about 1" of water - bake at 350 for about 45 minutes - or until they "give" when you squeeze them. Turn them right side up to "sit" in ramekins - pour about a tablespoon of heavy cream and real maple syrup in the cavity. Stir and place in oven to keep warm. Easy!

Our recent stay at the Artist's Inn was a memorable weekend. Innkeepers, Bruce and Jan Garrabrandt, are extremely hospitable, making dinner reservations and drawing maps for their guests and also suggesting antique markets, etc.
Jan's cooking is a culinary delight and she has no problem sharing her recipes.
Bruce, who is a self taught artist, has an incredible sense of humor which is reflected in much of his colored pencil drawings. He is the author of whimsical and insightful books, displayed on their coffee table. Their cats are a pleasure to watch, especially Jack and Sweetie. We purchased one of his "Sweetie" drawings because she closely resembles our cat.
The king size beds with the 600 count sheets are so comfortable.
We highly recommend this inn. They are wonderful hosts who work very hard to please.

Carole - Thanks for posting. We normally don't let the cats out in the public part of the inn, but since you requested an audience, they couldn't wait to meet you - and they just LOVED the attention!

We have just spent several days at The Artist's Inn, which we like to do a couple of times a year. As usual, the innkeepers, Jan and Bruce, went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and well taken care of. This is a luxury experience without a luxury price, from the moment you arrive and feel right at home, to the delicious four course candlelight breakfasts with interesting conversation and lovely classical music playing in the background. Your bed is turned down for you, a treat is left each evening in your room. You'll love the plush linens and sparkling clean room and private bath. Jan and Bruce are also experts on everything "Lancaster County" and are more than happy to share ideas for new experiences, restaurants, the best antique places, etc. A very happy environment to have as "home base" for your Lancaster explorations.

Room Tip: We love the Rose Room. Big comfy King size bed, adjacent sitting room with sleeper sofa if you need...

Our stay was fantastic, the room was decorated in a Christmas theme with great antiques. Jan has a great personality she makes you feel like you have known her forever. The inn was spotless and her breakfast's were out of this world. Went on a wine and cheese tour sponsored by the inn and enjoyed every minute. Looking forward to another stay at the inn.
