“Another Great Stay in Lancaster County PA”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 April 2012

I have found a new favorite motel in Lancaster county Pa, I almost hate to give away the name of this great place, it is The Mill Stream Inn in Smoketown, Pa.What a great place! My two boys and I stayed there during Easter break and I can't say enough wonderful things about this place. We arrived on Saturday and were planning on staying 5 nites but loved it so much we decided to stay an extra nite. We have stayed at the Bird In Hand Family run motels and Inns before but never at this property. Our room the 1st 4 nites had 2 Queen beds, mini fridge, and wonderful continential breakfast every morning, including delicious waffles, the last nite we had to move due to 2 tour buses coming in, so we moved to a family suite, which consists of 2 queen beds , bathroom, tv, chair in one room and the other room has a pullout futon, mini fridge microwave, table and chairs, dvd player and two comfy sitting chairs, and a door leading to outside balconey. I recommend the back side of the motel, there is a very lovely stream and amish farmhouse. You also have full use of the Bird In Hand Family Inn indoor pool and hot tub, although Mill Stream does have outdoor pool it wasn't open at this time, I plan on going again in the summer to make use of that pool.. I cannot say enough about the staff from the front desk personnel to the cleaning staff, and the wonderful Amish woman who owns the farm out back who works the breakfast room in the morning and makes great waffles....As I said this is my new favorite place!

Room Tip: I recommend the back of the motel because of the view of the stream and Amish Farm, but the front is...

The room was great! The morning staff was really good, and the complimentry tour was awsome. The down sides were, NO WIFI, its hard to get a stream side room and the evening service wasnt that good. It seamed like a corporation was or has taken over. The location was great. Breakfast wasnt bad but needed some kind of meat, and eggs. This review really should have been an average rating but, the room was very nice and the tour made the stay!

Room Tip: Tell them you want a stream side room as soon as you call to book the room.

If you are looking for a plush roomy place, this is not the place. It reminded of motels of the 70,s. Room is very small with no private sink area. In other words, the sink is in full view of the room. Only private area is the toilet and tub area. No WIFI in room but available in lobby and breakfast area(til 10pm). Room is very clean but much repair needed especially with outlets that do not work or have multiple outlets in one plug that fall out of the wall. Location is fairly good. Quiet area. Breakast free but not much choice except for waffles. For a place in Amish country that owns a bakery, its ashamed we had to eat all store bought food . Guess they wanted us to go buy some decent stuff at their bakery. Amish farm tour is great with knowledgible drivers. Tour is free. Front desk people are nice but not knowlegible. Ample free parking. Basically can find better since price is high for what you get.

The people are friendly and the rooms are clean. I will say I was slightly disappointed from the last review. Sat AM we came for breakfast around 10:30 AM and many things were out or empty. It seems they are going through a little bit of transition. The pool was nice as usual. I would also reccommed changing the coffee more often. When you call and ask how fresh and you get a not sure well that says it all. I swear the price has gone up a bit too and it is getting too close to places with more amenities. I still enjoy watching the buggies at dusk while sipping coffee on the balcony and I will return unless there is a price increase.

Its getting harder and harder to find a good hotel in the Lancaster PA area that isn't either too expensive for what you're getting, or not worth what you're paying. I'm not asking for a lot, a clean comfortable room where everything works and if not friendly - then at least professional-acting staff. Like most vacation spots, you need a room to sleep in, change in, and shower in and thats about it because you're planning on going places and doing things. And heaven forbid you need a hotel like this during any weekend the PA Renn Faire is doing anything - like in the case of our stay, the Celtic Fling. You know something is going on when you can walk into Walmart at 11pm and see men in kilts and women in corsets wandering around. Admittedly the hotel is a good drive from the Faire, 35-45 minutes or so. But, that drive puts you closer to Lancaster where there are tons of restaurants, shopping locations and other things to do so it still works. And if you're not heading up towards Manheim then this hotel is practically in the middle of it all, just a short hop back to route 30 and everything Lancaster has to offer awaits you.

The rooms - comfortable, roomy enough, clean. Bathroom - clean. Pool - looked nice but I didn't use it. Location - seemingly rural although closer to Route 30 then you might think at first. Some people might be nervous about the fact the front desk isn't 24 hours, but the staff was incredibly helpful when I called to check on the times because I knew I'd be staying at the Faire pretty late and then have to drive there. If you ask they can leave your room key somewhere for you. A minor quibble would be the internet service - there is indeed free Wifi available, in the lobby. Our room was about a half a dozen rooms off the lobby and we couldn't get a signal in it, which I knew was a possibility in advance. However, you can camp out in the breakfast room in perfect comfort at anytime during the day or until the lobby closes for the night. When we were there the staff offered to let me stay a few minutes extra if I needed to while she closed up, but I didn't want to cause her any bother. Something to note - the lobby sells soda's for about 25c less then most grocery stores and convenience stores. And if you have any late night internet needs while the weather is good there's a nice wicker settee outside the lobby that I took advantage of during my stay.

Breakfast - not as extensive as some places might be, but quite good with some unexpected goodies available. The Sunday morning I was there, it was towards the end of the meal and they did run out of a few things but I expect that. Two staffers were working constantly to keep things stocked, fresh and clean. They had what looked to be bread from the Bird in Hand Bakery (home-made style), bagels and other things you could toast. The usual butter, jam, cream cheese, peanut butter etc, a few types of cereal, milk, juices, various pastries. They also had make your own waffles (there's always a line for these, everywhere) with sugar-free or regular syrup, some biscuits and sausage gravy, fresh fruit, and my favorite surprise - locally made peach and strawberry yogurt.

There's also a free movie about the Amish for viewing in the lobby and a free tour available, which we didn't take due to time constraints. All in all this hotel ends up being a bargain for the price.

Room Tip: If Wifi is important to you, ask for a room adjacent to the lobby but don't assume you'll ha...
