Went here on a date-night Saturday night. No wait at what should have been prime time. We requested a table by the window, but they have the tables crammed so close together. The chairs were hard and uncomfortable. And have you even been out where the person sitting behind you continually bangs into your chair? Very annoying! And I had my chair pulled in as much as possible while still trying to be comfortable.

We had burrito Xel-ha and fish tacos, both of which were good. We also had the chips and salsa. I agree with others who complained with having to pay for that. Most Mexican restaurants give you chips & salsa for free. The fried ice cream was very good.

Our server did a fair job. She didn't check on us often and wasn't very friendly, but we didn't have to wait long for our food and drinks.

Overall......we will give it another try, but we'll be trying out other places first when downtown.

On Saturday afternoon I took my family into the restaurant for lunch. The service was not that great. I had to continue to ask for napkins, water, and for the restaurant not being crowded at all that the waitress should of been more attentive or maybe some of the other works that spent most of their time talking at the bar should of been helping out. We had to PAY for chips and salsa, really!!! This should of been the first clue and when the chips came to the table really stale we should of got up and left. If you want real fresh Mexican food find a better place to go eat your experience and pocket book will be better off.

I have been to Mexico many, many times and Las Velas' food is prepared very authentically. The drinks were great, the food was delicious, and the service was great! Be prepared to share or take home leftovers. Be careful going up the steps as they are not well lit.

We discovered Las Velas a number of years ago and enjoyed the food, so it is a "go-to" location for us in Pittsburgh. However...I have noticed a decline in the service in recent visits. This past weekend, we had reservations but when we arrived at the hostess station, we waited at least 10 minutes for someone to approach us (along with other diners). While our assigned server arrived promptly, she seemed in a hurry to get us to order...and then, when we did, either the iPad she used didn't work or she didn't hear us well (noise a problem) as the order was incorrect when it appeared. Plus, portions were small all around, including the beverages. That said...the food itself was good. In conclusion...it won't be the most relaxing meal you've ever had but you'll like what you are served.

We stopped in late night, so the service should have been great. . . no one but one loud table was there. We were seated then ignored for a long fifteen minutes. When the chips came they were stale. The salsa was tasteless. The margaritas were weak. Then came the lifeless enchiladas and fajitas. Simply awful.
