Six of us went to dinner during Light Up Night in Pittsburgh - the third visit for us in as many years on the same night. While the food was good, the service could not have been worse - and it had nothing to do with the crowds - there were several empty tables in our section and the other areas were not crowded either. it was our waitress - because it was LIght-Up Night, she informed us that we couldn't get a validation for our parking (not true, the manager told us when we asked). Further, she said she'd take the green beans off the plate when she was asked - not that the person wanted a substitution, she just didn't want the beans - but served them anyway. When asked for a glass for the bottle of beer she brought, she brought a glass that had lipstick on it. By that time, we were so displeased with her service, we didn't bother her - she was nasty and rude. This wasn't a "new wait staff" situation. IF we ever go back, we will make sure we don't get her again. All of us were stunned at how she treated us.

For some unknown reason, this restaurant often seems to be overlooked by locals. Last weekend, I took two grandsons to a show at the Byham Theatre. Caffe Amante is just a short walk away. It does not have a child menu but the offering of spaghetti worked well and both plates were clean at the end of the meal. The check total was very reasonable for the area. The waitress seemed distracted by people at another table that it appeared she knew, so our service was a little slow particularly given the number of open tables. The food, as always, was good.

Our waitress came up and told us the soup of the day but no specials of the day. Then she waits on a table right by us and tells them the specials. It took her about 10 minutes after this to come over and take our order. I ordered a caesar salad with shrimp. The shrimp was poorly seasoned and the lettuce was brown and wilted. I don't know how this place is still open. I used to dine here years ago and it was excellent then.

This is a very good choice for affordable downtown Pittsburgh food before a show or concert. Hidden in Fifth Avenue Place with tables well spaced, it is rarely crowded or noisy.
Three of us had a very good dinner with time to spare prior to a 7:30 curtain and felt it was a very good value.

We have eaten here many times in the past but I have never written a review until now.
We are planning to eat here tonight so I thought I would write a review based on our previous experiences.
Like so many others have said, this is a hidden gem and very reasonable considering that it is a downtown restaurant. The fact that it is not on street makes it less noticeable, but it is certainly worth seeking out. We too eat here before going to the symphony concerts and love the fact that there is free parking which lasts throughout the night. The parking is on the first level and the spaces are reserved, another plus.
The wait staff have always be efficient and competent. We love the menu selections and the quietness of the place. We have never seen it overly crowded or noisy, unlike so many other restaurants these days.
In short, I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who is downtown. It is indeed a hidden gem!
