I took my nephew white water rafting. We did not have reservation and walked in on a school trip for an all boys school. We were welcomed to join. This was my second time and was excited and nervous to be taking my nephew in a potentially dangerous adventure. We had a blast! The two other people in our raft were from Denmark and were traveling the country. So if anyone is still wondering if it is worth stopping in Ohiopyle you don't have to anymore because they were all over the US and choose to stop in Ohiopyle for there once in a lifetime vacation!
During our trip down the Yough we stopped twice. Once to venture out of the raft to go jump into the river. I believe they said the fall was 30 feet from the top of the rock we jumped from. It was great!! And no worries because of the life jackets and helmet he already had to wear. The second stop was for a picnic lunch. Even if you eat before leaving that sandwich tastes so good and you did not even realize how hungry you were!!!
This is a great trip! I loved the trading post and the guides! They were helpful, funny and encouraging, yet knew when to stress the importance of safety! I plan on visiting them again this summer when it is time to take my niece!
Our family with a 12 and 14 year old had a wonderful experience rafting with Ohiopyle Trading Post (OTP) and the wonderful and professional guides. In selecting the outfitter to shoot the rapids on the Youghiogheny, or Yough for short, I researched the various outfitters online and learned that most emphasized guided and not fully guided rafting trips, the difference being the former consisting of just a few guides for the entire group versus one in every raft; the exception seemed to be OTP which prominently featured fully guided trips. Since I was taking inexperienced kids and I had never rafted the Yough, fully guided was the only real option for us and a few phone calls confirmed the online research and the helpfulness and enthusiasm of the OTP employee helping me over the phone was great. The actual trip was thrilling and we all had a great time and the entire staff was fantastic. The choice of fully guided really paid off as it’s not just a matter of safety. The water levels much of the summer of 2012 were low and having a guide on board who knew the lines to take kept us moving instead of spending the day hung up on rocks going nowhere like many of the other outfitters’ rafts we saw which naturally made the trip much more fun for us. We highly recommend rafting fully guided with OTP.
We just returned from a great weekend in the Ohiopyle State Park, which included a great trip with Ohiopyle Trading Post down the Lower Yough. Our guide, Jeremy, was fantastic. I took my two 17 year olds and a 20 year old with me and they agree, it was a blast. None of us fell off the raft, even though Jeremy took us through the challenging parts of the rapids. He knows the river well and guided us with expertise and all of us felt completely safe! I would recommend Ohiopyle Trading Post and Jeremy to anyone. They are a great outfitter, had great rafts, equipment, wetsuits, paddling jackets, and anything else you need to make your whitewater raft trip a great experience. Even lunch was delicious. A very memorable time and we hope to do it again in the future!
Great Guide, well run activity... (ask for Nathan! aka Alvin!) Weather was awesome, the water was high, and a good time was had by all..
Excellent river plan, equipment and especially guides! But . . bring bottled water in the raft with you! Also, be prepared to do some heavy lifting lugging your raft to and from the river. The short DVD of the trip they sell for $40 should be included at the prices charged. A bottle of water should also be included!
Two of us went on a fully guided trip down the lower Yough river in one of OTP's 7 person rafts, (although most of the rafts had 4 persons plus a guide). We asked for a senior guide because while I enjoy normally enjoy jumping out of the raft to swim I had knee surgery awhile back and the knee is still a bit sore - I wanted to minimize the risk of the raft flipping over. Joel was the trip leader and our guide, and he couldn't have been better! He carried our raft down to the water and made sure our PFDs and helmets were properly adjusted. The water level that day was twice normal so the class III rapids were actually class IV! The trip was shorter too because of the river flow...Joel was very knowledgeable about the history of Ohiopyle and the Youghiogheny River, which made the trip even more enjoyable. Half way through we stopped for a break and the guides prepared a nice deli style lunch!. The take out for the lower yough is at the bottom of a somewhat steep road and Joel carried our raft up to the awaiting trailer. It was a great day on the water, we didn't flip but enjoyed bumping into a few rocks, hitting the waves and avoiding the hydraulics. The staff shot some really nice photos and a video that they shared on our return. They use top notch equipment and we really enjoyed the day. I've used the folks at Ohiopyle Trading on several occasions for both our boy scout troop and personal trips and highly recommend them.
