“Classy Fish & Cooking Classes too”
Reviewed 24 March 2012

I'd heard about Greenbacks as a fishing option, a restaurant and also cooking classes. I visited twice in the ten days I treasured Lord Howe and loved the food both night as well as learning a lot from the two hour class that Dave gave. One night was fish n chips with sashimi and carpaccio and the tempura battered kingfish was as superb as the raw version. The next night after six of us learned the ins and outs of catching, killing, chilling, choosing, filleting and fixing fish in various ways, we had another round of sashimi and carpaccio with a baked fish entree in a salsa accompanied by cous cous.

It was a high point of the trip and I enjoyed the small but great selection of wines. The staff were attentive, the outdoor porch setting was alluring and the desserts looked killer but there was no room. Prices are fair and the ambience is relaxing. As a travel writer, I give this two thumbs up!

“Great takeaway option”
Reviewed 29 January 2012

My Dad got a takeaway fish and chips from Greenback one night and said it was a cut above your normal fish and chip takeaway. I tried a bit off the side of his plate and have to agree.
If you're looking for a night off but don't want to go to a restaurant, this comes highly recommended.

“unpretentious and very pleasant”
Reviewed 4 January 2012

Greenbacks seems to be a restaurant that's been setup on someone's balcony, so it is quite casual but very pleasant. We didn't have entree and both had kingfish for main (with added calimari for my partner). The kingfish had a somewhat strange squishy texture that I've since been told results from defrosting the fish too quickly. Despite that the flavour was the best of 3 kingfish meals I had on the island - including one at Arajilla. Dessert was a vanilla panacotta with rosewater. The rosewater was initially quite strong and overpowering but after a couple of mouthfuls I really enjoyed it. Nice place for a casual meal.

“Beautifully cooked fresh fish.........and more!”
Reviewed 16 November 2011

The owners of Greenback Eatery also own a fishing boat and the fish on your plate was probably still swimming earlier that day. And what fish! The first night was Sunday and we both had an entrée of thinly sliced raw fish marinated in chili, olive oil and herbs. Absolutely delicious! Then we had the “Fish and three salads” for $25.00. It was the nicest kingfish we have ever tasted, coated in such a light batter, with serve yourself homemade salads. Including a chilled sauvignon blanc, the total bill came to $113.00. We went back on Tuesday for the curry night, which consisted of a fish, a chicken and a beef curry all made from scratch and accompanied by rice and crisp pappadums. Second helpings were encouraged! With two icey cold beers each the total came to only $76.00! We backed up for a third time on Thursday for the “Best fish, chips and salad” and once again were served a mound of fresh, perfectly cooked kingfish and calamari, chips, and a salad served separately in a bowl. I succumbed to the berry crumble for dessert and, with a bottle of white, the bill came to $105.00. If you want fresh, beautifully cooked seafood you won’t do better on Lord Howe than the Greenback Eatery.
