Reviewed 23 May 2012

The Wheelhouse boasts the only wharf-front accommodation in Mevagissey; this is both a blessing and a curse.

The position is great for its view of the fishing port activity and for strolling around the village. The restaurant is very good, too, and one of the most popular around. Service is good, with friendly Cornish folk doing a great job.

However if you're a light sleeper, you may well get little shut-eye overnight as the wharf noise goes on 24/7 - right in front of your room. And the price you pay for an old building (the original Port Master's house apparently) is incredibly tiny rooms. The smallest room we have ever been in - we even had trouble fitting three suitcases in and you have to turn around to use a towel in the minuscule ensuite!

Vehicle access is tricky too, but that's just the way it is in this village. (See tip.)

Room Tip: Make sure you have examined a map before trying to drive to the hotel and don't rely on GPS. Loo...

My boyfriend and I spent the easter break at the Wheelhouse Guesthouse, which is superbly located facing the harbour. From bedroom no. 3 we had a great view of the boats coming & going and could watch the fishermen unloading their catches. The seagulls were very noisy and woke us every morning with a dawn chorus but we soon got used to it!!

Parking was located about a 5-minute walk from the guesthouse and cost £5 per day for 24 hours.

Our room was very big and nicely decorated, but the double bed was in fact two singles pushed together with a hard ridge down the middle and for me very uncomfortable as I prefer a harder mattress; although when requested did receive firmer pillows which helped a little. The room was cleaned thoroughly on a daily basis, and the tea, coffe and biscuits were replenished daily. There was masses of wardrobe and drawer space for our clothes.

On our first day there was some confusion about ordering breakfast as nobody had told us that we had to order at the bar downstairs from the restaurant but once that had been sorted out could not fault the quality of the breakfast or the serving staff who were all very friendly, polite and helpful. My only quibble is the lack of choice you have if you did not want a cooked breakfast and were not keen on cereals. It would have been better if fruit and yoghurt was available as an alternative.

We ate at the Wheelhouse's sister restaurant where the fish was superb and also at the Sharkfin restaurant and can recommend both for the quality of the food

Mevagissey is a lovely little town with quaint shops and a variety of eateries and places to quench your thirst, and well situated for our visit to the Eden project, Fowey and Charlestown where we boarded the tall ships and visited the museum

We would not have any qualms about staying at the Wheelhouse again as long as the bed situation was sorted out!!

Room Tip: All rooms face the harbour

Rang to book for a two-night weekend stay in mid-December. Was told by very young and unsure sounding girl on phone that the Wheelhouse would only accept bookings made online. (How depressingly impersonal!) But when we tried to book online, having given bank details, we discovered that, between October and March, they insist guests check in before 16:30.

We both work and although we were only travelling from Devon, this was impossible. Can ANYONE other than a local be in Cornwall for 4.30 on a Friday? Or any day?

But the girl I spoke to gave me to understand that it was online or nothing. i.e No human-to-human negotiations possible.

So, the Wheelhouse lost our custom. I trust a charge hasn't been made against the bank details I gave..

We can't be the only ones who have had this problem. Luckily, there are plenty of other places to stay...

I hope The Wheelhouse is willing to re-think.

On arrival at the Wheelhouse on a Friday night at 8pm, having left Cardiff late afternoon, we were met by the accomodation and restaurant in darkness- and no contact number... we rang the Wheelhouse number only to hear it ringing inside the property. At a loss as to what to do next we went to the Harbour Tavern a few doors away, they were very helpful and gave me the number of a restaurant also owned by the same person. On ringing the number we were told he was busy, even though I had explained we couldn't access the accomodation (which was already paid for!) I was given another number to ring which was permanently engaged... I rang the restaurant again and insisted I spoke to the owner, he eventually answered the phone and said he'd be there in 20 minutes and that I should look out for his 4x4! He showed me the rooms and asked how long I had been waiting- which had been almost an hour- to which he shrugged his shoulders! At no point did he aplogise.. Very ungracious...
He should be more like his staff , who were friendly and helpful, the breakfasts excellent and the rooms very clean.

Room Tip: Ensure you have a contact number and that you have someone at the accomodation to let you in !
