Description: Bordering the village of Shefford Woodlands, The Pheasant has a hospitality pedigree that stretches back 450 years to when it first sheltered drovers herding livestock from Wales to London. Today, the newly refurbished pub and its eleven en-suite guest rooms offer an adventurous drinks menu, flavoursome modern British cooking, luxurious accommodation with outstanding value - and a warm, relaxed welcome. In January 2016, Jack Greenall became The Pheasant's new landlord and set about launching a new chapter for this well-loved local landmark. A sensitive refurbishment has brought the bar and restaurant a new, relaxed elegance with rich colours, comfortable furnishings and atmospheric lighting. Whether you pull up a vintage leather bar stool, hunker down in our cosy snug with its quirky print gallery and bespoke selection of local and general interest books or join friends at a table in the main dining space, it's a great place to sample our broad and imaginative drinks range and regularly changing menu which showcases the freshest and best local produce and unfussy, flavoursome cooking. Our approach to food is all about bringing together the best ingredients, simply and deliciously. Rooted in classic modern British cooking, our menu showcases the freshest meat, fish, vegetables and fruit and finest artisan products from around the country, while our diverse daily specials let us put local and seasonal ingredients centre stage. And then there's our accommodation, recently added and even more recently refurbished. Our guest bedrooms have all the relaxed, home-from home comfort you'd expect from a country pub, with the minute attention to detail of a smart hotel and a fresh, modern design approach. Elegant fluted armchairs, buttoned ottomans and individually hand-picked artworks are among the characterful features, while bathrooms, two of which have bathtubs as well as high-quality powerful showers, are stocked with indulgent handmade toiletries. All new bookings also include your choice from our full Breakfast Menu.

Out in the middle of nowhere but very convenient to M4 J14. Really nice country pub feel as you walk in. Obviously popular with the nearby racing fraternity. Had the fish and chips which was better than average and is apparently available all day. Friend had the homemade fishcakes. Good selection of beers. Clean loos, big carpark and dog friendly. Well worth a visit.

We went as a group of 10 family members, having previously visited in March.

The starters were around £6-£8, with the mains being between £8.50 and £17.50 and desserts from £6.50. The cheapest wines on the menu are £15.50 - typically an average tempranillo.

The fish and chips are £12.50, which I consider rather steep. A risotto with Salmon on top was priced at £15.50 and monkfish tails were £17.50.

The venue is quite nice, but overall I'd say the prices were about 25% too high for the quality, which is rather average.

I was not impressed by the menu stating that an optional 10% service charge is added automatically. This is rather presumptuous and not what I would consider to be good practise.

I visited the Pheasant Inn on the 19th December 2009 with a friend and had a satisfactory, if a little pricey meal. When I got home I realised I had been overcharged so I phoned the owner on 21st December 2009 and asked him to credit the overcharged amount back to my account. He took my bank details and said he would credit my account but was rather rude on the phone and eventually hung up on me. To date I have not received the money back into my account and an email I have since sent askiing him to deal with it has been ignored. The pub was empty on the night we visited and I did wonder why but now I can understand it as the owner was very rude and has now ignored my request to give me my money back. I won't be visiting again and would advise anyone who does visit to check their bill before paying as you won't get any joy if you discover you've been overcharged after you leave
