This place feels very special - on a rainy April night it was very cosy and welcoming, with lovely soft lighting and candles everywhere. The building itself is absolutely beautiful, and before you get to the dining room there is a cosy bar with comfortable chairs and sofas in which to relax. There could perhaps have been more choice on the menu for vegetarians, but the two salad starters we had were extremely tasty. The mains (also vegetarian) were slightly less good but still enjoyable. Really good service, and reasonable value.

Dear Loopsong,

Thank you very much for your positive review. I have shared your comments with our head chef so that we can review our offering for vegetarians.

We hope that the lack of choice on this occasion will not stop you using us again in the future.

Yours sincerely,

Christophe Dumeige

In the centre of the extraordinary little town Malmesbury lies this cute and very friendly and familiar Hotel Old Bell next to the Abbey. The abbey is frequently used as a townhouse not only as a church.

Was only able to enjoy surroundings and delights of menu briefly but the beauty, charm and level of service left a lasting impression on me. Was sad to leave. You need to allow yourself time to enjoy all the areas of the building to see and experience the facilities. Very relaxing. High standard and staff very kind

Hotel was simply beautiful with an old style charm that lives up to its reputation of oldest hotel in England.

The room was a little under expectation - much smaller than portrayed in the photos and also did not contain a bath (which was mentioned as featured on booking.com), additionally there were some issues with the shower - hard to control temperatures and the first day there was also a leak in the seal which led to the bathroom flooding after showers.

After some looking around, we decided to have dinner at the hotel the first evening also after seeing its very unique and enticing menu!! The food was spectacular and cooked to perfection, especially loved the creativity the chef had in choosing the ingredients which give it something unexpected.

Private onsite parking was also perfect. It's a great location for those looking for a short break in Cotswold and have a car to be able to travel to other parts of Cotswold and surrounding areas. Malmesbury is about 28 mins drive north from Bath, and around 50 mins up to the villages in the North.

Breakfast was also all included and lovely, though sometimes service was a bit of a wait.

Overall, would stay again, but in a larger room.

This was our first stay since the refurbishment. It was nice to see that the character of the building and hotel has been retained. The refurbishment has given the old building a fresh and cared for feel which was definitely overdue. That said, I did prefer many aspects of the pre-refurbished hotel and restaurant. We were disappointed to note that the sandwich bar menu has been replaced with a choice of a few tapas style plates. The bar used to be a proper bar you could wander up to, review the draught ales and order. We found out via a firm hand on the elbow that this is now discouraged and that it’s table service only. More present service or a few signs would be helpful! The food was ok, nothing to complain about or particularly enjoy. Not sure if we made bad choices or if the quality has dropped. We found the restaurant to be very expensive for only adequate food. Nothing particularly wrong or bad, just not the quality we’ve enjoyed there previously and definitely at a premium. That said, the staff and service in general was very good and the breakfast was excellent. The room was lovely and the bed very comfortable. We would stay again but eat elsewhere.

Dear Alliec555,

Thank you very much for your comments on the new Old Bell Hotel. I am sorry to read that the food selection and bar service are not to your liking. I would be very interested to understand more about the type of food you used to have with us in the past in order to make a comparaison with the actual offering. This will be very helpful.

As for the bar, we have decided not to compete with our local pubs anymore but I will investigate the service side.
