“Great day out and lovely walk too!”

We love walking down the hill by the locks especially on a nice day. But it doesn't matter whether the weather is nice or not, its a lovely experience. We love watching the boats go by and you can get a lovely cup of tea and cakes at the small cafe. We walk this way many times and never get tired of watching the boats negotiating the locks.Great for a day for all the family. You can, if you wish, cycle along the path (make sure you have a bell!) we often do and stop at one of the many canal side pubs for lunch. Wrap up warm and enjoy!

“Fascinating to watch on a sunny day”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 February 2012

Nice for a stroll if you dont mind hills !! So many locks in suc a short space that you wont miss the action with barges tooing and froing. There is a lovely little cafe where you can sit outside overlooking the water at the top of the hill and across the road at the top is a traditional pub overlooking the canal where you can get a good pub lunch. Opposit again is a nice garden centre.

“Camera required”

This is a spectacular place to take a walk & is easily accessed for all abilities & ages. Obviously the locks are on the hill so at some point you've got to tackle the hill but the paths are very well maintained & it's not hugely onerous. Park on one of the benches & watch the world go by. Nice little cafe at the top of the main hill or walk further & go on into Devizes. It would be a mistake to forget your camera. Enjoy!

“I love this place!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 February 2012

One good thing about this walk is that you can keep it as long or as short as you like .. and there are benches along the way so you are able to rest or just relax watching life on the water ..
We have walked along the banks of this canal and past the locks so many times and never will we get fed up with this beautiful walk! We park at the top by the wharf and walk down to the marina or to Seend .. and on the way back (which is uphill!) we stop for a drink at the little cafe there. A little further on and to the left are some amazing views right across the countryside and you can clearly see one of the white horses carved into the hill side ..

In the summer the canal is a colourful hive of activity with the passing by barges and the people jumping on and off their boats to tackle the set of 29 locks over a one mile stretch of the canal .. But even out of season there is so much to see along the canal bank.

We have walked this in all weathers and the tow path can sometimes get a little boggy in places so sensible footware is advised ..
Unfortunately there are no toilet facilities on the wharf or along the towpath except at the cafe which is customer use only .. and the public loos in Devizes car park are 20 p a go!!
