This is good for a short day trip. Take the cable car to the top of the hill/old town, and there you find an old city protected at the top of the hill from invaders. Interesting, but quiet when we visited in last July.

Lovely place to wander day or night, good choice of restaurants, enjoyed meals in Ristorante Il Castello and Ristorante L'Antica Fonte (best to prebook). Firework displays finished off the evening. Travelling on the Funicular Railway was easy and saved driving the long way round.

What a fabulous place. Stunning scenery and the most beautiful views of the surrounding Tuscan countryside.
The very small €4 euro fee to visit the museums is well worth the price.
Highly recommend you make time in your trip to stop off if in the area.

My wife and I toured the medieval village in Certaldo. The views were breath-taking and the buildings were quite impressive. We couldn't help but think as to how life would have been like 100's of years ago. We spent about 1 and a half hours in total touring, took in the 360 views and took lots of pictures. There were a few restaurants/cafes which were reasonably priced. It is well worth the $3.00 to take the trolley up and back. We both highly recommend this destination.

Certaldo Alto is nice example of a medieval hill top town, pleasant intricate streets, period buildings and panoramic views.
Sunset from any of these towns is always a joy.
There are a good selection of destinations to imbibe and or eat.
To avoid feeling disappointed, better to visit this before going to San Gimignano
