We had a nice experience at Pelican Eyes. We were celebrating a birthday and they reserved the best table in the restaurant for us. The server even sang happy b`day solo. The food was good, not great.

Our room was awesome (Casa Brazil). Views were incredible! Beds comfy and clean. Maybe a little too pricey.

Pool by restaurant was a little too dirty for us to want to swim there, but luckily they have 2 additional pools beyond that one that were clean and inviting.

We had a couples massage that was fantastic. An unexpected treat was the glass of wine after the massage and two chairs to watch the sunset.

They provide driving service that we took advantage of once before realizing how close everything is.

The electricity went out (like it often does in Nica) when we were trying to checkout. The staff handled the situation professionally and the best they could for the situation.

Room Tip: Casa Brazil is beautiful, but lots of stairs to get to it but also close to the good pools.

This resort is outdated. The facilities are fine, but not anything spectacular & certainly do not warrant the prices. The place is more like a condo/country club.

Booked using Groupon, and got a pretty good deal. The staff here is super, super friendly. Best sunset view in the city on their double-decker infiniti pool. The whole property is beautiful. Gorgeous actually. The front desk can easily accomodate whatever you need with drivers to take you wherever you want to go (at a charge). Loved it here and the city of San Juan del Sur itself is so charming. The on-location spa is pretty fantastic too. One of the masks used herbs grown on the property; it was so good, we asked for extra to take home. Great place, great people.

Room Tip: Try to stay in a room near the pool or the front desk. The property is pretty sprawling, so staying in a walkable distance helps when you come back from a late night out.

Breathtaking views... yes... Location... great. ...if you don't mind bed bugs!

I stayed at the Pelican Eyes Resort and Spa in Feb 2012 with some friends, and the beds in the Casa we had booked was completely infested with bedbugs -- to the point where we could visibly see the bugs crawling on the mattress. The staff at the reception desk did not fully grasp the seriousness of the issue and only reluctantly -- and after having wasted half of our day -- moved us to a different casa. There again, some of the beds were visibly infested with bedbugs, so for the remainder of the trip we could not use one of the rooms at all, forcing half of us to sleep on the couch.

Even worse -- back in the U.S., two of us had to seek medical attention for a severe allergic reaction to the bedbug bites wasting more time and money on cortisone shots and antibiotics.

The staff also seemed to not communicate very well with each other... promising one thing one day... and another thing the next. Personally, would never recommend it!

Pelican Eyes is in the heart of the city of SJDS but the layout is a complex of villas and buildings built in the hills. The advantage of this is you are very close to the restaurants, bars, clubs & beach while at the same time enjoying beautiful sunset vistas. The disadvantage of this layout is there are steep stairs to get from one place to another. Would only be a problem if your health limits this type of activity. They do have complimentary shuttles that take you from near your villa to the lobby and also into town. Hotel grounds are impeccable with the highlight being the infinity pools near the Bistro la Canoa restaurant. We were mesmerized every day with the most beautiful Pacific sunsets while sipping Happy Hour drinks in the infinity pools! Beautiful vistas of the crescent shaped beach, the town, nearby hills and boats shimmering in the sunset. Our party of 7 (two families) stayed in two separate 2-bedroom villas. The villas are spacious, nicely equipped with kitchen accessories and fairly clean (although there are ants, etc. since you are on a Nicaragua hillside). The beds were adequate but not the most luxurious. Most villas have ocean views off their balconies. Service is hit and miss. Everybody tries very hard but many younger staff don't necessarily understand English too well. I want to give a big shout out to Arturo, a server at Bistro la Canoa. He was very personable, funny and provided excellent service! We did have problems with hot water. No hot water 2 out of 3 days in one villa, and no hot water on Day 3 in the other villa. After repeated complaining & negotiating with management, we were finally given a reasonable credit to offset the hot water problems. We used a Groupon deal but even with that the rates are very expensive for Nicaragua standards. You're paying for the best views in town!

Room Tip: Casa Madrano had awesome ocean views off the back deck and was conveniently located to the pool & restaurant area. Casa Ensueno was also conveniently located but not as nice views of the ocean.
