McDOnald's has upgraded their menu to be more competitive with the other fast food restaurants. They are being more conscious of serving healthy fast food.

Ate here a few times lately and find this location to be consistently clean and friendly staff and unlike other local McDonalds, the food has always been served hot. The two breakfast sandwiches for $3 is quite a good buy!

When I was young I ate at McDonalds all the time. It was cheap, filling and convenient. I could idle my V8 engine at the drive through for a minute or two before stuffing my face with entirely predictable food.

Then I began to understand how horrible the food actually was from a health standpoint. I also became disgusted at how the company treated its minimum wage workers. The whole notion of "fast food" became repugnant, representing a corrosive force in our culture that leads to obesity, alienation and a generally unhealthy relationship between human beings and their food.

My disgust with McDonald's pre-dates the film "Super Size Me" (an excellent documentary about the restaurant, its marketing strategy, the food it serves and the effect on the people who eat there regularly). It was about 1985 that I decided I'd stop going there. I'd broken my vow a few times when travelling overseas, but for the most part, "McDeath" was out of life. My children have never eaten there, and there's no way I will willingly expose them to the restaurant.

All that said, McDonald's has changed, (gulp) for the better. I visited my local golden arches last month, and I'm compelled to say that there is real improvement on most fronts.

The restaurant has finally purged trans fats -- the cheap, chemically hydrogenated oils responsible for a whole host of diseases -- from its food. Bulky styrofoam has been almost entirely eliminated from the packaging. It also offer side salads for just $1. The salads are sulfated and rather small, but still, that's a good deal and it won't kill you. The dressing they offer, very surprisingly, is good quality and relatively healthy.compared to most FF restaurants: Newman's Own. If you don't drink sodas, there's not much else to drink. Watery orange juice from concentrate, milk for the kids. The HFCS "shakes" are made with some starchy mystery component that isn't milk. But the coffee isn't as bad as you might expect. At least three grades above dishwater.

On balance, however, the restaurant is still a cultural scourge, and I will never, ever bring my children there for fear they will succumb to the slick marketing and start desiring that food. The buns are still filled with chemical stabilizers, and the meat all comes from factory farms using heavy loads of antibiotics. You can be quite sure that the potatoes and salads are all derived from genetically modified crops.

Eating is a basic human function that should not be taken for granted, and can't be made "fast" without significant long-term consequences.
