This rental is in a great location. It was very close to many of the places we wanted to visit (Fallingwater, Ohiopyle, Laurel Caverns, Nemacolin Woods), saving us driving time. And it was near some good places to eat, from pizza to BBQ to fine dining.
In fact, there were a few restaurants & an antiques shop a short walk up the street. Plus it’s across the road from the winery and next door to the distillery, both of which were a nice visit. Yet at the same time, it was pretty isolated from other homes, so the yard was private for sitting outside.
There is a gravel driveway to the one side, so I was woken at 5am by cars rumbling up the drive. Then by noisy crows at 6am. This may not have been an issue if it were hot enough to use the a/c units that were in the bedroom windows. Or if they weren’t screwed in to prevent us from removing them & closing the windows.
The decks have a picturesque view of the winery fields, where the sun rises in the morning over the hill. It was very nice having coffee outside watching the sun rise (even if I was only awake because of the crows!). The road was good for a short walk past the winery and woods and homes, but it becomes a steep hill so the walk was limited before we needed to turn around.
It's a cute, quirky house and the furnishings were charming, but it was sad to see that a lot of basic maintenance has been neglected. I’m not talking about costly upgrades (though tile in the bathroom would be much nicer than linoleum, and nobody likes a rusted fridge). And I’m fine with rustic or shabby chic or whatever you want to call it (though this wasn’t rustic décor). I’m talking about a cracked window, a rusted heater vent, peeling decks, some moldy caulking on the bathroom floor, a trip-hazard hole in front of the entry deck step, and an untrustworthy rusted porch swing. I wished for a little cable management by the TV to get rid of the dangling power strip & cords (why not use the ceiling outlet & mount the power strip on the wall behind the TV? – I was tempted to do it, myself!). And who can reach a DVD player near the ceiling?? We were disappointed by the lack of chairs outside. There was a picnic table on the back deck, but only two chairs (not the 4 in the photos) by the fire pit.
We were also a little disappointed in housekeeping. On the one hand, the place wasn’t filthy – it was generally clean looking, except for a few cobwebs and a dirty laundry room floor. The bed sheets & towels looked & smelled clean. But they definitely missed some important things. There was a snack wrapper on the floor. The kitchen sink had a ring of soap scum. The glass top of the coffee table was covered in fingerprint smudges. There were a few stray hairs in the bathroom & a very visible pee & hair line off the back edge of the toilet seat. We had to wipe down both bathrooms & the kitchen when we arrived. I wiped out the dusty bureau drawers before using them.
Plus, the lack of dishwasher meant that previous renters were hand-washing the dishes and many weren’t very clean, so we washed items before 1st use. We did not use the rusty dirty dish drain that was available under the sink. It was disappointing, but fortunately, we only used the kitchen for quick breakfasts & snacks.
Our last evening we saw a mouse, which confirmed the erased but still visible note on the whiteboard, “We have mice.” We hadn’t seen droppings, but they pee everywhere they go & they do get around. So we wiped & packed up all our food that night.
I’m on the fence about whether or not we’d return. It’s a really cute (if somewhat neglected) house in a really great location, so I might take another gamble with the housekeeping if management plans to evict the mice and improve the cleaning.
The chalet was very nice and as advertised. It was in walking distance to a distillery and winery and a 10 minute drive to the Lady Luck casino. I wish the cable included ESPN or some of the other sports stations; but we were not there to watch TV. I would recommend the chalet to my friends planning to visit this area.
