If you have the time, take a half day or longer to explore Tillamook Head. The views are INCREDIBLE! Last time I was out there, you could look straight down at some grey whales who were resting during their long migration from Mexico to Alaska.

My wife and I love hiking, and we had a couple of hours in the morning on December 1st, so we decided to hike the Tillamook Head traverse. We had planned to go about halfway-- to see the WWII bunkers-- and go back to our car parked on the Seaside end. It started out very brisk; even though it was a sunny day, you're completely under the forest canopy, so in shade pretty much 100% of the time. The trail itself is not especially challenging-- it's rated "moderate" and has about 1300' elevation gain in the first mile and a half, I believe. But it is definitely muddy, so do not wear shoes you want to keep clean, in places you just have to go through it, though there is usually a way around. We had a great hike, just about the time you're wondering if there will ever be an end to the switchbacks, they pretty much end. But, that's as far as we got, since we ran out of time and had to head back.
The scenery is beautiful-- you're in a very green rain forest the whole way, but within sound of the surf as well. You can catch a few glimpses of the ocean from some spots on the trail, but mostly it's the amazing trees. Some are absolutely huge-- rivaling anything in Sequoia National Park. Parking is ample (at least in December) and free, but there is no water or bathroom facilities, and definitely not disabled-friendly! I do wish we had more time to make it to the bunkers, but there is always next time...

This was our 2nd time on the trail. The first time, last year, we started from Ecola Park. This time we started from Seaside. Its shorter from Ecola Park. But either way is equally "up". We love to hike and be in the forest. And that is what we got. Once in awhile you can peek out and see the ocean, but not really very often. Once you reach the "top", you will be rewarded with a beautiful view of the ocean and some surrounding rocks, small beach areas. But you will have to lean waaaay out over the trail/cliff to do so. The best view of the lighthouse will be seen at the "top" also. Pack a lunch and some wine to celebrate once you arrive. You'll be glad you did. There aren't any tables at the lighthouse viewing area, but there are some close by. If you decide to go only because you want to see the lighthouse, don't bother going if there are low-lying clouds or fog. Also, if it has been a wet spring/summer, wear crummy (but sturdy) shoes that you don't mind getting ruined. Mud will become your friend before its over. The very best advice I can give is to go with two cars, park one at Ecola, and the other at Seaside. And then hike the whole loop. Its beautiful!!! Enjoy!!!!
